LILY LOOKED IN the mirror. As with pretty much everything else in her life, this wasn’t exactly what she’d had in mind. She had always thought she would walk down the aisle on her wedding day looking like something out of one of those bridal magazines. She had never expected to do it eight months pregnant.
The day she’d found out she was expecting their baby had been one of the happiest of their lives. But when they’d sat down and worked out the due date they’d realised that, as always, things were a little complicated. The church and the venue had been booked, and everything had been planned for months. It had seemed silly and vain to change the date of their wedding just so that Lily could buy a gown in the size that she wanted.
After the briefest knock on the door Kate appeared, Rosie propped on one hip and a grin on her face. ‘How’s the blushing bride getting on?’ she asked. ‘Better than my brother, I hope. The poor guy’s so nervous he can’t even eat. Don’t know what he’s worrying about, personally. Not like you can run very fast in your condition. If you tried to ditch him he’d catch up with you and drag you back.’
‘And hi to you too.’ Lily laughed, accepting a glass of something sparkling and a kiss on the cheek. ‘I’m fine. Better than fine. I’m flippin’ brilliant and I cannot wait to be officially your sister. How long have I got?’
Kate checked the time on her phone. ‘Three minutes. Right—have we got everything? Old, new, borrowed, blue?’
Lily nodded. Not that she needed any of those things. As long as she had her family she had everything she wanted.
‘Let’s get you hitched, then.’
She walked into the church and saw Nic waiting for her at the end of the aisle. Any nerves she might have been hiding fell away. She had never felt so happy and in love and safe and secure in her life.
As she turned to look at her guests she saw Helen in the second row, a tissue pressed to her eyes. Her sister looked well, really well, better than she’d seen her for a long time. She was making tentative steps to get to know Rosie, and focussing on looking after her own health.
Rosie, still in Kate’s arms, went ahead of her up the aisle, so when she reached Nic her little family was all together. Looking around her, Lily felt more lucky than she ever had, and knew as she said ‘I do’ that nothing could make this moment more perfect.
