Creating Your Own Colors

IF YOU HAVE ONLY A FEW ACRYLIC PAINT COLORS in your artist toolbox, have no fear! It’s not hard to create your custom color mixes. With just a few different colors and black and white, you will be on your way to an expansive color palette in no time.

Create a Gray Scale

Start by making a gray scale for each of your colors. Begin with your base hue and add white to continually lighten it. Continue mixing different shades and tints by incorporating black as well.

Use a Gray Palette to Help Colors Pop

Try using a gray paper palette to truly see the colors in their best light.

Keep Mixing and Creating Colors

After you mix your gray scale of colors, try mixing the paints with one another to create custom colors. Add black and/or white to change the values once again. Take time to explore the possibilities you have even with a limited color palette.
