LEARNING HOW TO BOTH SEE AND CREATE organic and geometric shapes in your work is a beneficial skill to have in the process of making a successful abstract painting. On the outside looking in, it may appear that you are splattering and brushing on paint without a second thought, but those of us who paint abstracts know that the process, while freeing, actually requires the ability to problem solve. Artists must control the chaos while at the same time be willing to let go of areas and allow pieces to freely develop. When in doubt, refer to the rules of engagement—the elements of art and the principles of design—and then let your instinct take over. Once you let your passion come through, you’ll see magic dancing across your canvas.
“The essence of the beautiful is unity in variety.”
