Great Coxwell tithe barn (William Morris said)
‘As noble as a great cathedral’ – and
On the same mighty scale.
Arriving there
One incandescent afternoon, we saw
In the arrow-slit just over the main portal
A carrion crow alighting. It then flew
A dipping flight the length of the dark hall
To pass, without a feint at hesitation,
Out through the other slit at the far end,
The white glare momentarily gone black:
Like Bede’s sparrow, with a grimmer touch.
