Wine-Buying Strategies for Your Wine Cellar
BUYING10.41, 10.42 AND SELECTING WINES for your cellar is the most fun and interesting part of wine appreciation—besides drinking it, of course! You’ve done all your studying and reading on the wines you like, and now you go out to your favorite wine store to banter with the owner or wine manager. You already have an idea what you can spend and how many bottles you can safely store until they’re paired with your favorite foods and friends.
Wine buying has changed dramatically over the last twenty years. Many liquor stores have become wine-specialty stores, and both the consumer and retailer are much more knowledgeable. Even twenty years ago, the wines of South Africa, Spain, New Zealand, Australia, and Chile were not the wines the consumer cared to buy. Back then, the major players were the wines of California, France, and Italy. Today there’s so much more diversity in wine styles and wine prices, it’s almost impossible to keep up with every new wine and new vintage that comes on the market. You can subscribe, among many publications, to Wine Spectator, The Wine Enthusiast, Wine & Spirits, or Wine Advocate, Robert M. Parker Jr.’s newsletter, to help you with your choices, but ultimately you’ll find the style of wine to suit your own personal taste.
In this book I don’t recommend specific wines from specific years because I don’t believe that everyone will enjoy the same wines, or that everyone has the same taste buds as I do. I think it’s very important that every year the consumers have a general knowledge of wineries that have consistently made great value wine, and know what’s hot and what’s not. Here are some of my thoughts and strategies for buying wine this year.
There is, and will continue to be, an abundance of fine wine over the next few years. The vintage years of 2000, 2003, and 2005 in Bordeaux; 2001, 2004, 2005, and 2006 in Piedmont and Tuscany; 2003, 2004, 2005, and 2006 in Germany; 2003, 2005, and 2006 in the Rhône Valley; 2002, 2003, and 2005 in Burgundy reds; 2005 and 2007 in Chile; 2006 and 2008 in Argentina; and 2004, 2005, and 2008 in Australian Shiraz will give us great wines to drink over the next few years. The 2002, 2005, 2006, and 2007 vintages for California Cabernet Sauvignon, and 2005 and 2007 Chardonnays are generally excellent. The 1994, 2000, and 2003 vintage Ports are readily available. Although many of the wines from these regions are high-priced, there still remain hundreds of wines under twenty dollars that you can drink now or cellar for the future.
Anyone can buy expensive wines! In an average year I taste some three thousand wines. This past year I tasted over six thousand wines! The real challenge is finding the best values—the ten-dollar bottle that tastes like a twenty-dollar bottle. The following is a list of my buying strategies for my own wine cellar. This is by no means a complete roster of great wines, but most are retasted every year and have been consistently good.
