EMILY HAWBAKER has always had energy and a passion for science and education. After graduating from Pennsylvania State University with a degree in Earth science and a minor in science education, Emily began teaching eighth grade science in Delaware County, Pennsylvania, not far outside of Philadelphia. Her school was chosen to take part in an energy education project, where students learned about their energy use and taught others about what they had learned with the help of the National Energy Education Development (NEED) curriculum and materials. Emily saw her students come alive with this program, and it fueled her own passion for energy education.
After several years, Emily left the classroom to join NEED full time as the curriculum director, where she works to edit activities, create new materials, and share her passion for energy education as a facilitator of teacher and student events and programming across the country and around the world. Emily even gets to see her old school every now and again! She loves seeing students and teachers alike have their a-ha! moments when learning about energy, and it keeps her going each day.
When Emily is not reading, writing, and workshopping, you can find her enjoying Philadelphia’s sights and sounds, running, sailing, traveling, and tormenting her cats with a laser pointer.
