MODESTY IS A TWO-WAY STREET

duck

I also want the women to dress modestly, with decency and propriety, adorning themselves, not with elaborate hairstyles or gold or pearls or expensive clothes, but with good deeds, appropriate for women who profess to worship God.

—1 TIMOTHY 2:9–10

MANY MAY SEE this verse as being directed only at women. However, this verse also holds meaning for men, as well. Ladies, your bodies are gifts for your husbands, or eventual husbands if you’re unmarried. Instead of flaunting or agonizing over your body, clothe yourself with righteousness and goodness. It will serve you better than fancy or skimpy clothes, as all men of God will recognize the attractiveness of a godly woman. Gentlemen, this verse also gives you an idea of what to look for in a wife, as well as how your daughters should present themselves. Eve was a gift to Adam, as wives are gifts to their husbands. Think of women not as objects of lust, but as vessels of God’s love for you. Don’t forget, women are made in God’s image as well, an image that deserves respect. Modesty is a two-way street and requires cooperation and respect on both sides.

Prayer

Father, clothe me in Your love. Help me see myself and others in Your image, so that one day I may see Your face. In Jesus’ name I pray, amen.
