3: THE PITFALLS OF SUCCESS

duck

Now Lot, who was moving about with Abram, also had flocks and herds and tents. But the land could not support them while they stayed together, for their possessions were so great that they were not able to stay together. . . . So Lot chose for himself the whole plain of the Jordan and set out toward the east. The two men parted company: Abram lived in the land of Canaan, while Lot lived among the cities of the plain and pitched his tents near Sodom. Now the people of Sodom were wicked and were sinning greatly against the LORD.

—GENESIS 13:5–6, 11–13

SUCCESS CAN ALSO be a great test of faith. Abram’s nephew Lot chose the Jordan plain, where wicked people lived, because it would continue to add to his wealth. The proximity to wickedness would do very costly damage to his faith and the faith of his family. While we all enjoy success and wealth—and they are often blessings from God—if we don’t keep our hearts right, those blessings can turn on us and destroy both faith and family!

Prayer

Father, we thank You for our prosperity and our blessings, but we also pray for wisdom and humility, so that we don’t lose sight of what is most important. In Jesus’ name I pray, amen.
