Information on Canine Nutrition
Sources of information that I found invaluable in researching canine nutrition, these are more reliable and well researched than what can be retrieved by most Internet search engines:
- Nutrient Requirements of Cats and Dogs from the National Research Council (National Academies Press, 2006).
- Home-Prepared Dog & Cat Diets: the Healthful Alternative, by Donald R. Strombeck, DVM, PhD (Wiley-Blackwell, 1999), offers in-depth, slightly more technical information on home-cooked meals. This is a great source of information for understanding the needs of dogs with medical issues.
- Canine Nutrition: What Every Owner, Breeder, and Trainer Should Know, by Lowell Ackerman, DVM (Alpine Publications, 1999), offers similar information, especially regarding sick dogs.
- Small Animal Clinical Nutrition, 4th Edition (Mark Morris Associates, 2006), is extremely technical but has an incredible amount of detail.
- The Inflammation-Free Diet Plan, by Monica Reinagel (McGraw-Hill, 2007), details how inflammation is caused and how choosing the right foods can help reduce inflammation.
- 101 Foods That Can Save Your Life, by David Grotto, RD, LDN (Bantam, 2010), provides detailed information on the compounds in foods that prevent disease along with plenty of tasty recipes for your family.
- Your Dog: The Owner’s Manual, by Dr. Mary Becker and Gina Spadafori (Grand Central Life & Style, 2011), contains lots of hints and information that you will find invaluable.
- Banfield Pet Hospitals provided information from their State of Pet Health 2011 report, for which I am very grateful.
