55While an exclusively warm and happy attitude by the worship leaders can give a good sense of unity and community in the Lord (the “horizontal”—see n. 182), an exclusively dignified and serious attitude does not bring a sense of transcendence and the fear of the Lord. Rather, it creates an atmosphere of remoteness, grimness, and severity. I make this additional comment because many writers and church leaders who rightly disdain the loss of transcendence (especially in “contemporary” worship) may move to the other extreme. They encourage dignity and seriousness but without a deep joy mixed in with it. Such a spirit will not help people into the presence of God.
