75Redeemer Presbyterian Church meets in the Upper East Side and Upper West Side of the borough of Manhattan in New York City. (1) Denominational profile: Redeemer is a member of the Presbyterian Church in America (PCA). (2) Sociocultural context: The population of Manhattan is 1.5 million, and in our ministry area (midtown and downtown) it is nearly 70 percent single. Those singles state their “religious preference” as 40 percent Catholic, 21 percent Jewish, 6 percent Protestant, and 33 “other/no preference.” (Compare this with the rest of the United States, which is more than 50 percent Protestant and 12–15 percent “no preference.”) Fifty percent consider themselves “very liberal” compared to less than 20 percent nationally who give that answer. (3) Our congregation’s Sunday attendance in late 2001 was 3,800 adults in corporate worship. Of these, 75 percent are Manhattan residents, 80 percent are single, 98 percent are professionals, with an average age of 30. We are 50 percent Anglo, 35 percent Asian, and 15 percent of other ethnic groups. We estimate that 20–35 percent of our attenders are nonchurched and/or non-Christians.
