CHAPTER THREE
On Friday at 7:30 pm Steph was standing at the airport carousal, patiently watching for her case to wind its way around the conveyor belt. Bored and weary from her journey she watched the TV screen showing those waiting at arrivals. She had flown from Heathrow to Edinburgh, and her dad had said he would collect her. She was looking forward to seeing him, it had been longer than she had intended since she had been home, time just seemed to rush by. Falkirk was about half an hour’s drive away, dependent upon the traffic.
There was no sign of her father yet, which was unusual as he had a tendency to be very early, but as she scanned those waiting, her eyes were drawn to an attractive woman. Steph was immediately envious of who she was there to meet, probably some equally stunning guy. She was tall and slim but with enough curves in all the right places. She looked like a surfer girl, with tanned skin, sun bleached blonde shoulder length curly hair and blue eyes, bright enough that she could see them from afar. She was wearing very well worn light blue jeans and a matching denim jacket with a cut off navy tee-shirt, a belly button piercing obvious even from a distance. All of which hugged her body closely, like a second skin. A navy rucksack hung over her arm. Steph could feel herself begin to become aroused and turned away. It had been a while since she had been able to satisfy that need with another present....
Pull yourself together, you’ll be meeting your dad in a minute.
In the arrival hall Mia was equally nervous, would she would recognise Steph from Rob’s description, and the not so recent photo she’d been shown of a serious looking woman, wearing glasses, sitting at a desk? Not for the first time she wondered if they would have anything in common, they seemed so different. She smiled recalling Rob’s introduction to his daughter, as though their shared sexuality would immediately bring them together and ensure that they liked each other.
She had offered to collect Steph, keen to meet her without their parents observing. They were working hard to get the house and dinner ready for her arrival, both keeping busy, her mum nervous and keen to make a good first impression on her future step-daughter.
Mia recalled meeting Rob a few weeks before, returning from her recent trip ending in Melbourne. Her mum had prepared her in advance given that Rob was now staying with her much of the time. Mia liked her mum’s fiancé on sight. He was attractive for his age, 62 almost the same age as her mother, and very open and friendly. Mia’s father had died three years ago, like Rob’s wife also of cancer, and he had immediately reassured her that he was not trying to replace her father in her or her mother’s life. Over the last while, given she was staying with her mother and now Rob, she had got to know him better. She had had no problems when they later announced that he would be officially moving in, he had been staying there in all but name anyway.
She was surprised to find that she approved. Her mum was glowing and obviously in love, even though it wasn’t something she had been consciously looking for. While she had good friends and family close by Mia was happy that she had love in her life, she was far too young to be alone. She just wished she could be as lucky, here was her mum marrying for the second time when she was yet to experience anything close, lasting love was clearly evading her.
Mia watched as passengers began to come through the arrival’s door, she knew Steph wasn’t expecting her. She looked at all the dark-haired women on their own, holding up a piece of paper with Stephanie written on it. Suddenly her attention was caught by a tall woman, about 6 feet tall. What immediately struck her was the way she held herself, she was not slouching, but stood to her full height. She was model like with shiny black hair in an elfin cut, a strong bone structure and large striking green eyes. She was wearing black skin-tight jeans and a black leather blazer over a red shirt, the first few buttons undone and showing a silver star on a black leather chain. She was pulling a small case on wheels and carried a red leather laptop bag.
Wow, she’s hot.
Realising that she was no longer concentrating on finding Stephanie and had allowed the sheet of paper to fall, she leant down and picked it up. As she stood up and held it up again her eyes met the mystery woman’s, who she realised was smiling and walking towards her.
The model stopped when she reached her and Mia could feel all her confidence disappear, suddenly she was incredibly nervous, her mouth dry.
That can’t be her can it, she’s gorgeous?
Steph spoke hesitantly. “Hi, are you here for me?”
Mia concentrated on gaining control and being able to produce understandable words. “Well that depends, are you Stephanie?”
“Yes, but call me Steph please.”
Mia smiled. “Steph, Hi I’m Mia, short for Michelle, but if you tell anyone I’ll have to kill you. I’m Emma’s daughter.” She held out her hand.
Steph smiled, adding to her beauty and her green eyes glinted. She took her hand, enjoying Mia’s firm handshake. “Well pleased to meet you. Sorry I’m just surprised, I thought my dad said he was meeting me.”
“Yes, Sullivan cabs at your service.” She took a breath, well aware of her tendency to use humour to cover her nervousness. She smiled at Steph. “I offered, I hope you don’t mind. I thought it might be easier if the first time we met was without an audience. All this is strange enough don’t you think, and you’ve got two of us to meet at once? I at least got the opportunity to meet you and your dad separately.”
Stephanie nodded, grateful for her understanding of how awkward this might be, Mia had the advantage of already knowing her dad. “Yes, yes, it is, and no I don’t mind at all, lead on. I agree meeting you and your mum at once was causing me anxiety too, you made the right decision. It’s good to meet you Mia.” Steph had to concentrate on not looking her up and down as she spoke. Closer she was even more attractive than she had appeared on the TV screen, her blue eyes were an unusual deep blue and she was sure she could smell her favourite perfume. It was all she could do to not lean in closer and breathe deeply, just to be sure.
Mia smiled, she was surprised Steph was anxious, she appeared very confident on the outside. “And you, come on let’s get the car.” She looked down at Steph’s baggage. “Can I give you a hand carrying anything?”
“No, it’s fine honestly, I’ve got it.” She took her laptop bag and fitted it over the handle of the case, making it easier to wheel them both together.
Mia could see it was a matching set, all leather, and that it was expensive. In fact, looking closely it was obvious from the cut of her clothing that Steph had money. This was obviously from her own work as whilst not poor Rob was just comfortably off. He’d explained that he retired earlier than planned from his accountancy job when his wife got ill, now he was self-employed, taking in some tax work when he chose. Mia suddenly felt conscious of the well-worn chain store clothing she wore, she knew she made every effort to look good, but on her budget shopped at cheaper stores and supermarkets or online. Steph on the other hand obviously wore brands. She led her to the car, via the ticket machine, shaking her head when Steph offered to pay.
Steph took in the car, it was a small silver soft top Mercedes SLK. “Nice car!”
“Yes, it’s Rob and Emma’s.”
“Rob?”
“Your dad’s and my mum’s.”
“Oh, very nice.”
Rob? A Merc too, and sporty, her dad had tended towards big safe cars like Volvos.
Steph wondered what other changes there were in store, it wouldn’t be long before she found out.
“Yes, I’m enjoying borrowing it, I’ve got a bike and I didn’t see your case fitting, but I’m just glad your case isn’t bigger, even this car is limited on boot space and it would have been embarrassing if you had to have the case on your lap. Would you like the roof down, given it’s such a nice evening?”
“Yes, why not. We need to take every opportunity we can in Scotland.” Mia watched as Steph took Pilot mirrored sunglasses from her bag and put them on, and stretched out, her slim thighs just fitting in the small space. She took her own Ray Bans from the glove compartment too, running her hands through her hair before putting them on. Taking another deep breath, she made herself concentrate on driving. She lowered the roof and quickly started the car and drove out the airport.
Steph observed Mia’s left hand, no ring.
Married with 3 kids, unlikely, and definitely not fat either. Abby would be so disappointed. She on the other hand wasn’t. Mia would soon be her sister though, and she was stunning, even if she could there was no way she’d be interested in a workaholic geek like her.
Mia was incredibly aware of Steph’s presence so close to her. Her strong thighs, her hands resting on her legs, with their long-tapered fingers, fingers she already imagined touching her... and more. It scared her how immediately drawn she was to her. Once she got out of the airport and onto the motorway she turned to her. “So Steph, we’ve got about 30 minutes together until we meet the parents, tell me about you.” Her eyes glinted. “Here’s your opportunity to tell me what you wouldn’t say on front of your dad.”
“God that sounds strange, the parents, I’ve just got used to only having one, and coming from you too, shared parents, it’s weird.”
Mia quickly glanced over to her, she looked worried. “Sorry, I didn’t mean to freak you out.”
Steph smiled. “No, you didn’t it’s okay, it’s just taking some getting used to that’s all. Surely it must be the same for you? You came home from your travels to find my dad ensconced in your family home after all.”
Mia smiled, she was touched that Steph had thought of her. “Well yes, or at least it was, although they weren’t officially living together then. When my mum initially told me she was seeing someone I was flabbergasted. It was quite amusing initially once I got home. They pretended he just visited, and built up to his staying, when he’d obviously all but moved in. It was quite the role reversal when mum asked if he could stay over. I jokingly made her sweat a bit, acting like the moral parent, before I said it was her house and I didn’t have an issue with it. As far as I knew she wasn’t even dating, not that I was aware of anyway, and then that cruise and before I knew it she was getting married. I’ve got an advantage though, I’ve met your dad and got to know him, and I’ve seen them together. I’ll leave it to you to work it out for yourself, but I can see how much they love each other, and how good they are together. My mum wasn’t a hermit, she lived a life, and she had only just retired, but now it’s like she had a new lease of life. That was the first holiday she went on alone other than meeting me abroad a couple of times, but now they plan to travel, and they’ve got each other’s friends, most of whom seem to be accepting. The ones that aren’t are probably jealous. I think what I’m trying to say is that their world has opened up.”
“I’m glad, I just want my dad to be happy, and I was worried as I don’t live nearby, but it’s like I’ve got a new family and that’s kind of strange.”
“Yes, me too Sis.” She winked at her.
“Oh god.” Steph couldn’t stop herself laughing either. “You know I always wanted a sister, I drove my parents mad when I was a kid, asking why they couldn’t get me one. Eventually when I was old enough they explained why.”
“Why if you don’t mind me asking?”
“No, it’s fine. My mum had struggled to have me, after many miscarriages and had been told it would be dangerous to have another. I’m sure they thought explaining would stop me going on. Fat chance, even then though I still couldn’t fathom why they didn’t just adopt one for me. It seemed so simple to me at 10.”
Mia chuckled. “So, your dad told me, and me too, I watched friends with sisters and whilst the ones with younger ones complained about having them tagging along, and those with older ones about them not being interested in them, I still wanted one. It seems a bit late now though, my wish to tag around with the older kids are long gone. As for my doll playing days, they are so long ago I barely remember them.”
And I’m attracted to you, being your sister is the last thing I want.
Really, not what I heard, the grown-up variety anyway.
“Agreed, let’s be friends.”
“Assuming we get on.”
Although I think we will.
Steph smiled at her. “Oh, I think we will don’t you. I grow on people apparently.”
“What like a fungus?”
You’ve grown on me already, something I definitely wasn’t expecting.
“Something like that.”
“Nice.”
