CHAPTER FIFTEEN
The speeches were over, the photographs taken, the dinner eaten, the cake had been cut, and the dancing had commenced. Steph watched Mia across the room, she envied the way she moved around, her ability to talk to all the guests and make everyone feel included. She thought back to the day, they had been fortunate as everything had been perfect.
She recalled watching Mia as she walked her mum down the aisle towards her and her dad. She knew her attention should have been on Emma, the bride, and she did see her briefly, but her eyes were continually drawn back to Mia. She couldn’t stop thinking about her. She was so beautiful; her curly hair was almost white with the sun and her midnight blue dress accentuated her eyes. It hugged her figure, emphasising her cleavage and allowing glimpses of her long-tanned legs. Steph’s mouth was dry, remembering these legs draped around her shoulders the previous night, her thighs holding her tight as she fucked her with her tongue. She could still taste her. Thinking about this now Steph could feel a warm wetness gather between her legs and she pressed her thighs together instinctively. Steph realised that while they had been in the same company, she had hardly spent any time with Mia all day. Mia had been with her mum as she was supporting her dad, they had been together in the photos and both were sat at the top table, but they hadn’t had any time alone.
Suddenly Janie appeared at her side, following Steph’s gaze. “God my feet are killing me, I don’t know how Mia does it. What are they 4 inches?” They both watched as Mia swung her cousin around on the dance floor, both laughing and obviously enjoying themselves.
“Looks like it.”
“I could barely stand up in them, never mind dance, particularly after a few glasses of champagne, and Mia’s been on her feet all day.”
Steph smiled to herself thinking back to the conversation she had had with Mia in their room earlier as they dressed, on the very same topic.
“It’s not as though you need them for height.”
Mia closed the distance between them, her hands-on Steph’s cheeks, kissing her gently on the lips. “Oh, I don’t know I quite enjoy being able to do this without having to stretch. Plus, it makes my legs look longer and thinner.”
“Well when we’re lying down, we’re both the same height. But seriously you don’t need them, you’ve got gorgeous legs.”
“I thought you found my heels sexy.”
Steph couldn’t help but grin. “Okay you’ve got me there, they are.”
She winked at her. “Well maybe if you play your cards right later, I’ll keep them on for you.
Steph kissed her deeply. “Promises promises.”
Suddenly she was swiftly brought back to the present by Janie’s words. “Earth to Steph, come in Steph.” As Steph turned to look at her, realisation dawned, it had been some time since she had seen such an expression on Steph’s face, if ever.
“She’s gorgeous, isn’t she?”
Steph hesitated, but this was Janie who she had known since primary school. “Yes, she is.”
Janie turned towards her. “Something has happened between you hasn’t it, since yesterday I mean?” Abby had told her about their kiss at the engagement party.
There was no point denying it, Janie knew her better than anyone. “Yes, last night.”
“Thank god, it’s about time, and that explains why Mia can’t stop smiling either.”
Steph turned towards her, a slight smirk on her face. “You approve then?”
“Oh god yes, with bells on! I knew there was something between you the moment I saw you together, and Abby will be happy too. You deserve something good in your life, and Mia is lovely, she’s not just a pretty face.”
“Yeah well let’s face it it’s a fling, and probably not the best idea I’ve ever had given she’s family now, and she doesn’t hang around in one place for five minutes.”
Janie grabbed two champagne flutes from the circling waiter and pulled her over to sit with her at a table so they could talk. “Have you talked to her Steph because she’s really into you, it’s obvious given how she looks at you. There’s no one else in the room for her when you are in it.”
Steph looked up, finding Mia’s gaze on her from across the room. “Do you really think so?”
“I know so, and so would anyone with eyes in their heads. I’ve tried to tell you Steph, you’re far from the geeky teenage tech nerd you still see when you look in the mirror. You’ve got presence, a great body from all that swimming, and piercing green eyes. Aside from the fact you’re loaded, any girl would be lucky to have you.” Janie bumped her hip against Steph. “In fact, if you hadn’t been my best friend since primary school, I’d snap you up myself.”
Steph laughed. “Much as I love you, we’d drive each other mad.”
“True. Agreed, you’re just stuck with me as a friend, and as a friend I need to ensure you meet someone lovely who deserves you, and I approve wholeheartedly.”
“Likewise, Mia’s not just any girl though, she’s almost my sister.”
“Step-sister, you’re not related, you’re not breaking any laws. Abby told me about this, it’s preposterous. Chill out Steph, don’t over think this, and find a reason to destroy it before you get too close. I know how you operate remember. Just go with the flow. I’ve not seen you this happy for a long time, and I want it to continue. Come on drink up, and let’s dance.”
It was getting later, and Steph was feeling slightly drunk. She smiled as she realised that Mia was dancing next to her. “Hey how are you, you must be shattered after today?” Steph’s duties in standing up for her dad were minimal, she’d done little more than help him on with his jacket, straighten his tie, and fetch him a single malt, nothing compared to supporting the bride.
Mia winked, whispering huskily in her ear. “And after last night, but then that must go for you too. I’m not too tired to miss the chance to dance with you though.”
“Even to cheesy eighties numbers?”
“Particularly to them.” They watched as their parents danced past, their arms around each other and their glances only for each other. “Look at them, it’s so obvious how much they love each other.”
“Yes, your mum makes him so happy Mia.”
“They make each other happy, and they deserve each other which makes me really happy.”
“You’re a beautiful person, I hope you know that.”
Mia smiled, Steph’s expression hinting at deeper emotion. “Thanks Steph that means a lot coming from you.”
“I’m sorry I left you to do all the organising of this.”
Mia smiled, relax I told you they did it all.” She whispered into her ear. “Anyway, last night made up for everything that’s gone before, well nearly everything. Maybe you just need to keep making it up to me.”
“Ah a difficult job but someone has to do it. I accept, with bells on.”
At that the song ended and a slow dance began. Many of the single women around them moved off the dance floor. Steph and Mia looked at each other for a second before Mia’s smile faded and she began to move away.
Before she could think what, she was doing Steph reached out and grasped her wrist, gently stopping her. “Don’t go Mia, dance with me?”
Mia turned, a surprised look in her eyes. “Seriously! You want to go public with this, here today?”
“Yes, I want to dance with you Mia, people can think what they like. Right now I need to feel that beautiful body against me... again.” With that she pulled her towards her and into her arms. “Anyway, isn’t it traditional for the best wo..man and the bridesmaid to hook up.”
Mia placed her hands around her neck, whispering seductively into her ear. “Far be it for us to break with tradition. Although it’s a bit late for that, maybe I should have held out until tonight instead of giving in, on my bike of all places.”
“Mm, I’d have had to have slept in the corridor, or the lift. I was really struggling about how I’d be able to share a room with you last night, when I was so attracted to you.” She wrapped her arms around her waist. “I’ve thought of little else all day but holding you again. You are beautiful in that dress, as well as out of it.” She wrapped her arms around Mia’s waist drawing her even closer.
Mia put her arms around Steph’s shoulders. “So, you’re leading then?”
Steph nuzzled her face in Mia’s hair, whispering in her ear. “Well, after all I’m the tallest, more butch than you, and literally wearing the trousers, so it seems only right.” She pulled her close until their bodies touched. “Now shut up and dance with me.”
“God how could I refuse such an invitation. Have I told you how hot you look in that suit?” Mia smiled, pulling Steph even closer, their bodies touching along their length. Immediately her arousal flared, she groaned lightly into Steph’s ear as their breasts touched and she inhaled the musky scent that was all Steph.
Steph pulled her even closer, her lips nuzzling Mia’s neck, inhaling her light fruity perfume.
God, I want her.
One slow number merged into another as they swayed together oblivious to the guests watching them.
Rob pulled back from Emma. “Have you seen our daughters?”
“Mm making out on the dancefloor like a couple of teenagers, would be hard not to.”
“Do you mind?”
“No, I could see their attraction from the beginning, it was obvious they liked each other, and I knew Mia had feelings for her. They kissed at our engagement party.”
“Did they now?”
“Yes, Mia was embarrassed, she asked me not to tell you.”
“Ah keeping secrets from me already.”
“She was mortified Rob, Steph couldn’t face her, remember she left before she got up.”
“Now I do. That explains it. It could be awkward though.”
“I don’t think either of them would be doing this if it didn’t mean something, have you heard Mia even mention travelling in the last few months?”
“Actually no, now you mention it.”
“No neither have I and I must admit selfishly that makes me really happy, if Steph has anything to do with that then I’m glad. They’re adults Rob and if it doesn’t work out then I’m sure they will be able to handle contact, let’s face it they’d just have to.”
“I hope so.”
“Don’t start worrying, I need you to retain all your energy for later. It’s not just our kids who’ll be making out later, at least I hope not. Remember we’re not legally married until I’ve had my conjugal rights fulfilled.”
Rob raised his eyebrow. “Your conjugal rights, is that not for the husband?”
Emma laughed, playfully swatting his behind. “In this age of equality, how dare you! I hope I haven’t married a misogynist.”
“Me, no I’m definitely not something I can’t even spell. Far be it for me to get in the way of progress, I suppose I’ll just have to let you do your worst with me. How early can we leave?”
“I’m afraid we’ll be here until the end, saying our goodbyes.”
He pulled her close, laughing into her neck. “Mm best get another drink then.”
