I found the dress SallyAnn is wearing at Goodwill for $13. It’s a brand I had never heard of, but the silhouette is pretty straightforward; it’s got a V neck with a little knot at the bust and a flared skirt. And I thought the brushstroke print was pretty, the kind of print you might see on a Diane von Furstenberg dress. It was in perfect condition—no rips, holes, stains—so we bought it and added a white denim jacket, a metallic bag, and some simple peep-toe pumps. The whole outfit cost less than $100, and every piece can be mixed and matched with other items in SallyAnn’s closet. If we had gotten all caught up in the need for a recognizable designer name, we would have walked right past this. When thrift shopping, it’s imperative that you judge the garment on its own merits, not on the designer’s reputation or lack thereof. Any piece you buy should be in “like new” condition and, most important, fit you really well.
