“ITS”

DRIVING ME

BONKERS

One more little grammar pet peeve. Next time you are posting on Facebook, consider the difference between its and it’s.

IT’S is a contraction of two words: IT and is. So, it can be used whenever you say, “IT IS.” FOR EXAMPLE:

It’s my birthday.

It’s not a lie this time.

It’s sad that I didn’t receive enough attention as a child.

ITS without an apostrophe is a possessive, so use ITS to express the fact that something belongs to “IT.” FOR EXAMPLE:

My pet monkey pooped its pants.

My pet snake shed its skin.

The Department of Health left its phone off the hook.
