SOME NOTES ON PROCESS

The encyclopedia was compiled with three processes. The primary process, which takes up the bulk of the work, is compiled historical information gathered from a combination of correct and/or incomplete liner notes, decades of conversations with primary sources on the works in question, and other literature and articles gathered over almost 30 years. Some of the conversations therein are also with valuable primary sources who are, sadly, no longer with us.

The secondary process was achieved through poring over acquired liner notes on lesser-known and rarer albums, numbering in the hundreds of releases. These include but are not limited to newer albums released since the 1990s and limited releases from earlier periods. The secondary process also included using the internet as a research device for secondary and tertiary sources.

The tertiary—but likely the most important—process has been through filling in the gaps via extensive interviews with primary sources. These are some of the most pivotal people involved in the recordings themselves, including lengthy interviews with George Clinton himself and various collaborators in virtually every era of P-Funk’s illustrious and continuing existence. These interviews have exceeded 66 hours and represent a variety of extremely important primary sources. The information pertaining to the tertiary step is included in the following section.
