After a subpar 2015 season in Double-A that saw his prospect status beginning to dim, a strong 2016 performance at Triple-A Omaha resulted from Dozier shortening his swing and improving his bat path. After making his major league debut at the end of 2016, Dozier was ranked as the Royals’ third-best prospect a year ago. But 2017 turned out to be a lost season for Dozier, as he was first sidelined early in the year with an oblique injury and then later missed two months with a broken hamate.
After finally getting healthy Dozier was called up to the big league club in September, appearing in eight games mostly off the bench. Dozier was rounding back into form after returning to Triple-A Omaha with a strong August in which he hit .260/.351/.560, building on the swing improvements he made the previous season. He’s a fringe-average defender who played as much in the outfield in 2017 as his more natural third base as well as seeing time at first base. He may project better as a bat off the bench capable of filling in at all four corner positions. Dozier headed to Hermosillo, Sonora after the big league season to make up for lost time with an assignment in the Mexican Pacific League. He hit only .211/.298/.368 in a month of winter ball action before coming home.
With the Royals’ 2018 lineup in a state of flux due to impending free agency of several key regulars, Dozier has a good shot at earning at least a utility job out of spring training.
