I don't know how I did it, but I got us to The Cove. There, I went to a storage facility and left Lou outside the gates. I jumped over it and when I landed, I stumbled. I looked down at my leg and realized I was bleeding. My body was struggling to heal over the gunshot and I just now felt the searing pain.
I ignored it and headed for the storage facility that Celia and I owned.
I tore off the lock and got inside the car that was stored there. I pulled it out of the storage facility and went around to the trunk. It opened underneath my hand and I began to toss in the bags that were lined against the wall.
I was woozy and hoped that I could at least get it out the gate into Lou.
I closed the trunk and went around to the front. As I did, a wave of nausea and dizziness hit me and I had to sit down in the front seat.
I only gave myself a second and refused to give in to the urge to close my eyes.
I started the engine and headed for the gate. I was thankful that it opened underneath a sensor and I didn't have to tear another lock free. I wasn't sure if I could do it. Being shot once was enough and even though Celia had dug it out of me, the second bullet was doing its work too.
I helped Lou into the passenger seat and then got back behind the wheel. I sat for a minute, grateful that I had gotten this far.
“Eli?” Lou croaked.
“Yeah, baby, I'm here. I got you out. You saved us,” I whispered and reached over to him.
When I took his hand, he blinked slowly at the dashboard and turned his head towards me.
I noticed that one pupil was dilated and the other one wasn't.
He had a concussion and from the way he was swaying, it was a pretty bad one.
"What a pair we make," I muttered.
The sedan that we were in was completely unremarkable and it was designed to be that way. I pointed the car East and began to drive.
Beside me, Lou fell asleep.
