Chapter Six

I served Hysear his breakfast and I saw him off to school. As soon as the door closed behind my son, I confronted Jarvis.

Jarvis, you didn’t come home last night ‘till way after two o’clock. That ain’t like you.” I started in with my back to him as I washed the breakfast dishes.

I was out, Neesha.” he replied while opening the fridge and sticking his head in it.

And I’m sick of you bein’ in my shit.”

Yeah, nigga, I know you was out. But out where?”

I was out wit’ some friends, Neesh.” He sighed. “That’s it and that’s all. We smoked and drank a little and it got late. I got home when I could.”

Well, what was you smokin’ cause it was all over you last night. That couldn’t have been no Ganja smellin’ like that.”

Jarvis leaned against the counter and said, “I didn’t say that it was.”

Well, what was it?”

Coke.” he replied looking into my eyes. He wanted to fight me but why?

Coke? What the hell you mean Coke, Jarvis?”

Coke, Kaneesha, C.O.K.E. I smoked some Coke.” I immediately snatched my hands out of the water and faced him.

Like in freebasing, baseballin’, hittin’ the pipe or all the above?” I asked needing clarification.

I smoked a little piece of crack, Neesh. Nothin’ major! Just wanted to try somethin’ different.” He admitted drinking some milk before putting the cup in the sink. He grabbed a napkin and wiped his hands. “So stop trippin.”

Did this nigga just say, nothing major and he wanted to try something different by smoking crack? Is this mutherfucka for real?

Somethin’ different? Tryin’ something different is buying another type of beer, alcohol, or a new brand of cigarettes. It ain’t smoking crack, nigga! What the fuck is wrong wit’ you?”

Jarvis immediately went into defense mode.

Stop bein’ a drama queen. You sniff, so we in the same boat!” He threw at me.

No the fuck we not either!”

You fuckin’ delusional! We both do drugs, so it is the same thing, Kaneesha.” He said. “That’s why I don’t talk to you no more ‘cause you think you better than me when you not.”

Better than you?”

You heard what the fuck I said. I’m sick of your shit. So I’ma ask you, do you want to be the man in this relationship?” He asked nodding his head.

I’ll do a damn better job than you!”

Then be it,” he said throwing a napkin he had in his hand in my face. “’Cause I’m outta here.”

As he had done a lot lately, he left out and slammed the door.

I thought about bringing it up again later but decided to drop the subject. Besides, I too had my own secrets. In a few days, I would be doing my first job for Stone behind Jarvis’s back.

I would have to have faith in Reds with this job and that wasn’t like me. Besides, I didn’t even know here. But she did seem to know what the fuck she was doing. All of a sudden I became lightheaded and the pit of my stomach churned. I sure hope I know what I’m doing.
