This book is based on good first aid practices adapted and expanded to fit the needs of a wilderness environment. It continues the successful philosophy of first aid care included in the Seven Steps for First Aid Response as found in all editions of this book.
Every section of the fourth edition has been reviewed and revised to meet the most recent standards of first aid care from the American Red Cross and Wilderness Medical Society. Updated content has been added to almost every section, including new material on the prevention of infection, splinting, and high altitude problems. New diagrams have been added and old diagrams have been revised and redrawn to improve their clarity.
Several features have been designed to allow the reader quick access to specific information about illness or injuries and first aid care. Summary boxes, which are doubled in this edition, include specific information needed to identify illnesses and provide step-by-step treatments. A new Injury and Illness Quick Reference Guide is found in the front of the book to direct the reader quickly to major sections of the book on illnesses and injuries. Cross-references in the text and an extensive index have greatly improved access to important material.
