Muscles Associated with the Large Intestine

Hamstrings

Situated at the back of the upper leg are 3 main muscles that make up the hamstrings. Many people have tight hamstrings, mainly due to sitting in chairs where the hamstrings are always contracted. A lot of anger and similar emotions get stored in the legs and hamstrings.

The hamstrings are activated anytime we bend our knees. They are lengthened when we straighten the legs.

Tensor Fasciae Latae

The tensor fasciae latae attaches to the iliac crest and extends itself down the outside of the hip where it attaches to the illiotibial band. It is often very tender and super tight especially in runners or those with tight hips in general.

This little muscle is activates when we draw our legs out to the sides. It is also in a constant state of tension to stabilize the hips.

Quadratus Lumborum

The quadratus lumborum is a deep muscle in the lower back area that originates on the iliac crest and attaches to the lumber spine and lower rib.

This muscle is one of the deep core muscles that help us to sit and stand erect. Often it is weak or not used properly because of poor posture. When the posture is aligned, this muscle will step up to the challenge of holding you upright in an efficient manner. When used correctly, it gets very strong and can help us to sit on the floor or in meditation comfortably for a long period of time.
