Summer



For summer, the following foods and methods are recommended for nourishing and supporting the organs at this time of year:

Method of Cooking: lightly cooked foods (steaming, poaching, stir-frying), small amounts of raw foods

Grains: millet, barley, rye

Vegetables: celery, spinach, cucumber, lettuce, greens, radish, asparagus, eggplants, cabbage, tomatoes, broccoli, cauliflower, zucchini, corn, beets, carrots, parsley, sprouts, watercress, bamboo shoots

Fruits: apples, pears, watermelon

Beans and Nuts: soy beans, mung beans, azuki beans, chick peas

Meat: chicken, eggs, crab, tuna, oysters, and clams

Herbs and Seasonings (only if lacking fire): black pepper, ginger, cinnamon, nutmeg, fennel

Avoid / Reduce

- Roasted, fried and deep fried foods

- Chillies

- Coffee and Chocolate

- Alcohol

- Vinegar

- Excess salt

- Cheese

- Ice-cream & ice water
