My Bulgarian grandmother, Savta Mati, didn’t speak English and I didn’t speak Hebrew or Bulgarian, so borekas formed the bond between us. Before I ever had the slightest interest in food (as an eater, let alone as a cook), these flaky filled pastries occupied a special place in my heart.
