Luke

Dedication to Theophilus

LUKE 1 Inasmuch as many have undertaken to compile a narrative of the things that  a have been accomplished among us,

2 b just as those who  c from the beginning were  d eyewitnesses and  e ministers of  f the word  g have delivered them to us,

3it seemed good to me also, having followed all things closely for some time past, to write  h an orderly account for you,  i most excellent  j Theophilus,

4that you may have  k certainty concerning the things  l you have been taught.

Birth of John the Baptist Foretold

5 m In the days of Herod, king of Judea, there was a priest named Zechariah, [1]  n of  o the division of Abijah. And he had a wife from the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elizabeth.

6And they were both  p righteous before God, walking  q blamelessly in all the commandments and statutes of the Lord.

7But they had no child, because  r Elizabeth was barren, and  s both were advanced in years.

8Now  t while he was serving as priest before God when  u his division was on duty,

9according to the custom of the priesthood, he was chosen by lot  v to enter  w the temple of the Lord and burn incense.

10And the whole multitude of the people  x were praying  y outside at the hour of incense.

11And there appeared to him an angel of the Lord standing on the right side of  z the altar of incense.

12And Zechariah was troubled when he saw him, and  a fear fell upon him.

13But the angel said to him, “Do not be afraid, Zechariah, for  b your prayer has been heard, and your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and  c you shall call his name John.

14And you will have joy and gladness, and many will  d rejoice at his birth,

15for he will be  e great before the Lord. And  f he must not drink wine or strong  g drink, and  g he will be  h filled with the Holy Spirit,  i even from his mother’s womb.

16And he will turn many of the children of Israel to the Lord their God,

17and  j he will go before him  k in the spirit and power of Elijah,  l to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and  m the disobedient to the wisdom of the just,  n to make ready for the Lord a people prepared.”

18And Zechariah said to the angel,  o “How shall I know this? For I am an old man, and my wife is advanced in years.”

19And the angel answered him, “I am  p Gabriel.  q I stand in the presence of God, and I was sent to speak to you and to bring you this good news.

20And behold,  r you will be silent and unable to speak until the day that these things take place, because you did not believe my words, which will be fulfilled in their time.”

21And the people were waiting for Zechariah, and they were wondering at his delay in  s the temple.

22And when he came out, he was unable to speak to them, and they realized that he had seen a vision in  s the temple. And  t he kept making signs to them and remained mute.

23And  u when his time of  v service was ended, he went to his home.

24After these days his wife Elizabeth conceived, and for five months she kept herself hidden, saying,

25“Thus the Lord has done for me in the days when he looked on me,  w to take away my reproach among people.”

Birth of Jesus Foretold

26In the sixth month the angel  x Gabriel was sent from God to a city of Galilee named  y Nazareth,

27 z to a virgin betrothed [2] to a man whose name was Joseph,  a of the house of David. And the virgin’s name was Mary.

28And he came to her and said, “Greetings,  b O favored one,  c the Lord is with you!” [3]

29But  d she was greatly troubled at the saying, and tried to discern what sort of greeting this might be.

30And the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for  e you have found favor with God.

31And behold,  f you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and  g you shall call his name Jesus.

32He will be great and will be called the Son of  h the Most High. And the Lord God  i will give to him the throne of  j his father David,

33and he will reign over the house of Jacob  k forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end.”

34εἶπεν δὲ Μαριὰμ πρὸς τὸν ἄγγελον· πῶς ἔσται τοῦτο, ἐπεὶ ἄνδρα οὐ γινώσκω;

34And Mary said to the angel, “How will this be, since I am a virgin?” [4]

35And the angel answered her,  l “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of  h the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born [5] will be called  m holy— n the Son of God.

36And behold, your relative Elizabeth in her old age has also conceived a son, and this is the sixth month with her  o who was called barren.

37For  p nothing will be impossible with God.”

38And Mary said, “Behold, I am the servant [6] of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word.” And  q the angel departed from her.

Mary Visits Elizabeth

39In those days Mary arose and went with haste into  r the hill country, to a town in Judah,

40and she entered the house of Zechariah and greeted Elizabeth.

41And when Elizabeth heard the greeting of Mary, the baby leaped in her womb. And Elizabeth  s was filled with the Holy Spirit,

42and she exclaimed with a loud cry,  t “Blessed are you among women, and  u blessed is  v the fruit of your womb!

43καὶ πόθεν μοι τοῦτο ἵνα ἔλθῃ ἡ μήτηρ τοῦ κυρίου μου πρὸς ἐμέ;

43And why is this granted to me that the mother of  w my Lord should come to me?

44For behold, when the sound of your greeting came to my ears, the baby in my womb leaped for joy.

45And  x blessed is she who believed that there would be [7] a fulfillment of what was spoken to her from the Lord.”

Mary’s Song of Praise: The Magnificat

46And Mary said,

y “My  z soul  a magnifies the Lord,

47  b and my  z spirit rejoices in  c God my Savior,

48 for  d he has looked on the humble estate of his servant.

For behold, from now on all generations  e will call me blessed;

49 for  f he who is mighty  g has done great things for me,

and  h holy is his name.

50 And  i his mercy is for those who fear him

from generation to generation.

51  j He has shown strength with his arm;

 k he has scattered the proud in the thoughts of their hearts;

52  j he has brought down the mighty from their thrones

 l and exalted those of humble estate;

53 he has filled  m the hungry with good things,

and the rich  n he has sent away empty.

54 He has  o helped  p his servant Israel,

q in remembrance of his mercy,

55  r as he spoke to our fathers,

q to Abraham and to his offspring forever.”

56And Mary remained with her about three months and returned to her home.

The Birth of John the Baptist

57Now the time came for Elizabeth to give birth, and she bore a son.

58And her neighbors and relatives heard that the Lord  s had shown great mercy to her, and they rejoiced with her.

59And  t on the eighth day they came to circumcise the child. And they would have called him Zechariah after his father,

60but his mother answered, “No;  u he shall be called John.”

61And they said to her, “None of your relatives is called by this name.”

62And  v they made signs to his father, inquiring what he wanted him to be called.

63And he asked for  w a writing tablet and wrote,  u “His name is John.” And they all wondered.

64 x And immediately his mouth was opened and his tongue  y loosed, and he spoke,  z blessing God.

65And  a fear came on all their neighbors. And all these things were talked about through all  b the hill country of Judea,

66and all who heard them  c laid them up in their hearts, saying, “What then will this child be?” For  d the hand of the Lord was with him.

Zechariah’s Prophecy

67And his father Zechariah  e was filled with the Holy Spirit and  f prophesied, saying,

68  g “Blessed be the Lord  h God of Israel,

for he has  i visited and  j redeemed his people

69 and  k has raised up  l a horn of salvation for us

m in the house of his servant David,

70  n as  o he spoke by the mouth of his holy prophets from of old,

71  p that we should be saved from our enemies

and from the hand of all who hate us;

72  q to show the mercy promised to our fathers

and  r to remember his holy  s covenant,

73  t the oath that he swore to our father Abraham, to grant us

74 that we, being delivered from the hand of our enemies,

might serve him  u without fear,

75  v in holiness and righteousness before him  w all our days.

76 And you, child, will be called  x the prophet of  y the Most High;

for  z you will go before the Lord to prepare his ways,

77 to give knowledge of salvation to his people

a in the forgiveness of their sins,

78 because of the  b tender mercy of our God,

whereby  c the sunrise shall  d visit us [8]  e from on high

79 to  f give light to  g those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death,

to guide our feet into  h the way of  i peace.”

80 j And the child grew and became strong in spirit, and he was  k in the wilderness until the day of his public appearance to Israel.

The Birth of Jesus Christ

LUKE 2 In those days  l a decree went out from  m Caesar Augustus that all the world should be  n registered.

2This was the first  n registration when [1] Quirinius  o was governor of Syria.

3And all went to be registered, each to his own town.

4And Joseph also went up  p from Galilee, from the town of  q Nazareth, to Judea, to  r the city of David, which is called  s Bethlehem,  t because he was of the house and lineage of David,

5to be registered with Mary, his betrothed, [2] who was with child.

6And  t while they were there, the time came for her to give birth.

7And she gave birth to her firstborn son and  u wrapped him in swaddling cloths and  v laid him in a manger, because there was no place for them in  w the inn.

The Shepherds and the Angels

8And in the same region there were shepherds out in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night.

9And an angel of the Lord  x appeared to them, and  y the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were filled with great fear.

10And the angel said to them, “Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all  z the people.

11For  a unto you is born this day in  b the city of David  c a Savior, who is  d Christ  e the Lord.

12And  f this will be a sign for you: you will find a baby  g wrapped in swaddling cloths and lying in a manger.”

13And suddenly there was with the angel  h a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying,

14  i “Glory to God  j in the highest,

j and on earth  k peace  l among those with whom he is pleased!” [3]

15When the angels went away from them into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let us go over to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has made known to us.”

16And they went with haste and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby  m lying in a manger.

17And when they saw it, they made known the saying that had been told them concerning this child.

18And all who heard it wondered at what the shepherds told them.

19But  n Mary treasured up all these things, pondering them in her heart.

20And the shepherds returned,  o glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen, as it had been told them.

21And  p at the end of eight days, when he was circumcised,  q he was called Jesus, the name given by the angel before he was conceived in the womb.

Jesus Presented at the Temple

22And  r when the time came for their purification according to the Law of Moses, they brought him up to Jerusalem  s to present him to the Lord

23(as it is written in  t the Law of the Lord,  u “Every male who first opens the womb shall be called holy to the Lord”)

24and to offer a sacrifice according to what is said in  t the Law of the Lord,  v “a pair of turtledoves, or two young pigeons.”

25Now there was a man in Jerusalem, whose name was Simeon, and this man was  w righteous and  x devout,  y waiting for  z the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was upon him.

26And it had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not  a see death before he had seen  b the Lord’s Christ.

27And he came in the Spirit into the temple, and when  c the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him according to the custom of the Law,

28he took him up in his arms and  d blessed God and said,

29 “Lord, now you are letting your servant [4] depart  e in peace,

 f according to your word;

30 for  g my eyes have seen your  h salvation

31  i that you have prepared in the presence of all peoples,

32  j a light for revelation to the Gentiles,

and  k for glory to  l your people Israel.”

33And  m his father and his mother marveled at what was said about him.

34And Simeon blessed them and said to Mary his mother, “Behold, this child is appointed  n for the fall and rising of many in Israel, and for a sign  o that is opposed

35(and a sword will pierce through your own soul also), so that thoughts from many hearts may be revealed.”

36And there was  p a prophetess, Anna, the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher. She was advanced in years, having lived with her husband seven years from when she was a virgin,

37and then as a widow until she was eighty-four. [5] She did not depart from the temple,  q worshiping with  r fasting and prayer night and day.

38And coming up at that very hour she began to give thanks to God and to speak of him to all who were  s waiting for the redemption of Jerusalem.

The Return to Nazareth

39And when they had performed everything according to  t the Law of the Lord, they returned into Galilee, to their own town of  u Nazareth.

40 v And the child grew and became strong, filled with wisdom. And the favor of God was upon him.

The Boy Jesus in the Temple

41Now  w his parents went  x to Jerusalem every year at  y the Feast of the Passover.

42And when he was twelve years old,  z they went up according to custom.

43And when the feast  a was ended, as they were returning, the boy Jesus stayed behind in Jerusalem.  w His parents did not know it,

44but supposing him to be in the group they went a day’s journey, but then they began to search for him among their relatives and acquaintances,

45and when they did not find him, they returned to Jerusalem, searching for him.

46After three days they found him in the temple,  b sitting among  c the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions.

47And all who heard him were amazed at his understanding and his answers.

48And when his parents [6] saw him, they were astonished. And his mother said to him, “Son, why have you treated us so? Behold,  d your father and I have been searching for you in great distress.”

49καὶ εἶπεν πρὸς αὐτούς· τί ὅτι ἐζητεῖτέ με; οὐκ ᾔδειτε ὅτι ἐν τοῖς τοῦ πατρός μου δεῖ εἶναί με;

49And he said to them, “Why were you looking for me? Did you not know that  e I must be in  f my Father’s house?” [7]

50And  g they did not understand the saying that he spoke to them.

51And he went down with them and came to Nazareth and was submissive to them. And  h his mother treasured up all these things in her heart.

52And Jesus  i increased in wisdom and in stature [8] and in  i favor with God and man.

John the Baptist Prepares the Way

LUKE 3 In the fifteenth year of the reign of  j Tiberius Caesar,  k Pontius Pilate  l being governor of Judea, and  m Herod being tetrarch of Galilee, and his brother Philip tetrarch of the region of Ituraea and Trachonitis, and Lysanias tetrarch of Abilene,

2during  n the high priesthood of Annas and  o Caiaphas,  p the word of God came to  q John the son of Zechariah in  r the wilderness.

3And he went into all the region around the Jordan, proclaiming  s a baptism of repentance  t for the forgiveness of sins.

4As it is written in  u the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet,

v “The voice of one crying in the wilderness:

w ‘Prepare the way of the Lord, [1]

make his paths straight.

5  x Every valley shall be filled,

y and every mountain and hill shall be made low,

z and the crooked shall become straight,

and the rough places shall become level ways,

6  a and all flesh shall see  b the salvation of God.’”

7Ἔλεγεν οὖν τοῖς ἐκπορευομένοις ὄχλοις βαπτισθῆναι ὑπ’ αὐτοῦ· γεννήματα ἐχιδνῶν, τίς ὑπέδειξεν ὑμῖν φυγεῖν ἀπὸ τῆς μελλούσης ὀργῆς;

7He said therefore to the crowds that came out to be baptized by him,  c “You brood of  d vipers! Who warned you to flee from  e the wrath to come?

8Bear fruits  f in keeping with repentance. And do not begin to say to yourselves,  g ‘We have Abraham as our father.’ For I tell you, God is able from  h these stones to raise up children for Abraham.

9Even now the axe is laid to the root of the trees.  i Every tree therefore that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.”

10Καὶ ἐπηρώτων αὐτὸν οἱ ὄχλοι λέγοντες· τί οὖν ποιήσωμεν;

10And the crowds asked him,  j “What then shall we do?”

11And he answered them,  k “Whoever has two tunics [2] is to share with him who has none, and whoever has food is to do likewise.”

12ἦλθον δὲ καὶ τελῶναι βαπτισθῆναι καὶ εἶπαν πρὸς αὐτόν· διδάσκαλε, τί ποιήσωμεν;

12 l Tax collectors also came to be baptized and said to him, “Teacher,  j what shall we do?”

13And he said to them,  m “Collect no more than you are authorized to do.”

14Soldiers also asked him, “And we,  j what shall we do?” And he said to them,  m “Do not extort money from anyone by threats or by false accusation, and be content with your  n wages.”

15As the people were in expectation, and all were questioning in their hearts concerning John,  o whether he might be  p the Christ,

16 q John answered them all, saying, “I baptize you with water, but  r he who is mightier than I is coming,  s the strap of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie. He will baptize you  t with the Holy Spirit and  u fire.

17His  v winnowing fork is in his hand, to clear his threshing floor and to  w gather the wheat into his barn,  x but the chaff he will burn with  y unquenchable fire.”

18So  z with many other exhortations he preached good news to the people.

19But  a Herod the tetrarch, who had been reproved by him for Herodias, his brother’s wife, and for all the evil things that Herod had done,

20added this to them all, that  b he locked up John in prison.

21Now when all the people were baptized, and when  c Jesus also had been baptized and was praying,  d the heavens were opened,

22and  e the Holy Spirit descended on him in bodily form, like a dove; and  f a voice came from heaven,  g “You are my beloved Son; [3] with you I am well pleased.” [4]
