Sons and Heirs

ΠΡΟΣ ΓΑΛΑΤΑΣ 4 Λέγω δέ, ἐφ’ ὅσον χρόνον ὁ κληρονόμος νήπιός ἐστιν, οὐδὲν διαφέρει δούλου κύριος πάντων ὤν,

GALATIANS 4 I mean that the heir, as long as he is a child, is no different from a slave, [1] though he is the owner of everything,

2ἀλλ’ ὑπὸ ἐπιτρόπους ἐστὶν καὶ οἰκονόμους ἄχρι τῆς προθεσμίας τοῦ πατρός.

2but he is under guardians and managers until the date set by his father.

3οὕτως καὶ ἡμεῖς, ὅτε ἦμεν νήπιοι, ὑπὸ τὰ στοιχεῖα τοῦ κόσμου ἤμεθα δεδουλωμένοι·

3In the same way we also, when we were children,  c were enslaved to the elementary principles [2] of the world.

4ὅτε δὲ ἦλθεν τὸ πλήρωμα τοῦ χρόνου, ἐξαπέστειλεν ὁ θεὸς τὸν υἱὸν αὐτοῦ, γενόμενον ἐκ γυναικός, γενόμενον ὑπὸ νόμον,

4But  d when the fullness of time had come, God sent forth his Son,  e born  f of woman, born  g under the law,

5ἵνα τοὺς ὑπὸ νόμον ἐξαγοράσῃ, ἵνα τὴν υἱοθεσίαν ἀπολάβωμεν.

5 h to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive  i adoption as sons.

6Ὅτι δέ ἐστε υἱοί, ἐξαπέστειλεν ὁ θεὸς τὸ πνεῦμα τοῦ υἱοῦ αὐτοῦ εἰς τὰς καρδίας ἡμῶν κρᾶζον· αββα ὁ πατήρ.

6And because you are sons, God has sent  j the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying, “Abba! Father!”

7ὥστε οὐκέτι εἶ δοῦλος ἀλλ’ υἱός· εἰ δὲ υἱός, καὶ κληρονόμος διὰ θεοῦ.

7So you are no longer a slave, but a son, and if a son, then  k an heir through God.

Paul’s Concern for the Galatians

8Ἀλλὰ τότε μὲν οὐκ εἰδότες θεὸν ἐδουλεύσατε τοῖς φύσει μὴ οὖσιν θεοῖς·

8Formerly, when you  l did not know God, you  m were enslaved to those that by nature  n are not gods.

9νῦν δὲ γνόντες θεόν, μᾶλλον δὲ γνωσθέντες ὑπὸ θεοῦ, πῶς ἐπιστρέφετε πάλιν ἐπὶ τὰ ἀσθενῆ καὶ πτωχὰ στοιχεῖα οἷς πάλιν ἄνωθεν δουλεύειν θέλετε;

9But now that you have come to know God, or rather  o to be known by God,  p how can you turn back again to  q the weak and worthless elementary principles of the world, whose slaves you want to be once more?

10ἡμέρας παρατηρεῖσθε καὶ μῆνας καὶ καιροὺς καὶ ἐνιαυτούς,

10 r You observe days and months and seasons and years!

11φοβοῦμαι ὑμᾶς μή πως εἰκῇ κεκοπίακα εἰς ὑμᾶς.

11I am afraid  s I may have labored over you in vain.

12Γίνεσθε ὡς ἐγώ, ὅτι κἀγὼ ὡς ὑμεῖς, ἀδελφοί, δέομαι ὑμῶν. οὐδέν με ἠδικήσατε·

12Brothers, [3]  t I entreat you, become as I am, for I also have become as you are.  u You did me no wrong.

13οἴδατε δὲ ὅτι δι’ ἀσθένειαν τῆς σαρκὸς εὐηγγελισάμην ὑμῖν τὸ πρότερον,

13You know it was  v because of a bodily ailment that I preached the gospel to you  w at first,

14καὶ τὸν πειρασμὸν ὑμῶν ἐν τῇ σαρκί μου οὐκ ἐξουθενήσατε οὐδὲ ἐξεπτύσατε, ἀλλ’ ὡς ἄγγελον θεοῦ ἐδέξασθέ με, ὡς Χριστὸν Ἰησοῦν.

14and though my condition was a trial to you, you did not scorn or despise me, but received me  x as an angel of God,  y as Christ Jesus.

15ποῦ οὖν ὁ μακαρισμὸς ὑμῶν; μαρτυρῶ γὰρ ὑμῖν ὅτι εἰ δυνατὸν τοὺς ὀφθαλμοὺς ὑμῶν ἐξορύξαντες ἐδώκατέ μοι.

15What then has become of your blessedness? For I testify to you that, if possible, you would have gouged out your eyes and given them to me.

16ὥστε ἐχθρὸς ὑμῶν γέγονα ἀληθεύων ὑμῖν;

16Have I then become your enemy by  z telling you the truth? [4]

17ζηλοῦσιν ὑμᾶς οὐ καλῶς, ἀλλ’ ἐκκλεῖσαι ὑμᾶς θέλουσιν, ἵνα αὐτοὺς ζηλοῦτε·

17They make much of you, but for no good purpose. They want to shut you out, that you may make much of them.

18καλὸν δὲ ζηλοῦσθαι ἐν καλῷ πάντοτε καὶ μὴ μόνον ἐν τῷ παρεῖναί με πρὸς ὑμᾶς.

18It is always good to be made much of for a good purpose, and  a not only when I am present with you,

19τέκνα μου, οὓς πάλιν ὠδίνω μέχρις οὗ μορφωθῇ Χριστὸς ἐν ὑμῖν·

19 b my little children,  c for whom I am again in the anguish of childbirth until Christ  d is formed in you!

20ἤθελον δὲ παρεῖναι πρὸς ὑμᾶς ἄρτι καὶ ἀλλάξαι τὴν φωνήν μου, ὅτι ἀποροῦμαι ἐν ὑμῖν.

20I wish I could be present with you now and change my tone, for I am perplexed about you.

Example of Hagar and Sarah

21Λέγετέ μοι, οἱ ὑπὸ νόμον θέλοντες εἶναι, τὸν νόμον οὐκ ἀκούετε;

21Tell me, you who desire to be under the law, do you not listen to the law?

22γέγραπται γὰρ ὅτι Ἀβραὰμ δύο υἱοὺς ἔσχεν, ἕνα ἐκ τῆς παιδίσκης καὶ ἕνα ἐκ τῆς ἐλευθέρας.

22For it is written that Abraham had two sons,  e one by a slave woman and  f one by a free woman.

23ἀλλ’ ὁ μὲν ἐκ τῆς παιδίσκης κατὰ σάρκα γεγέννηται, ὁ δὲ ἐκ τῆς ἐλευθέρας δι’ ἐπαγγελίας.

23But  g the son of the slave was born according to the flesh, while  h the son of the free woman was born through promise.

24ἅτινά ἐστιν ἀλληγορούμενα· αὗται γάρ εἰσιν δύο διαθῆκαι, μία μὲν ἀπὸ ὄρους Σινᾶ εἰς δουλείαν γεννῶσα, ἥτις ἐστὶν Ἁγάρ.

24Now this may be interpreted allegorically: these women are two  i covenants.  j One is from Mount Sinai, bearing children for slavery; she is Hagar.

25τὸ δὲ Ἁγὰρ Σινᾶ ὄρος ἐστὶν ἐν τῇ Ἀραβίᾳ· συστοιχεῖ δὲ τῇ νῦν Ἰερουσαλήμ, δουλεύει γὰρ μετὰ τῶν τέκνων αὐτῆς.

25Now Hagar is Mount Sinai in Arabia; [5] she corresponds to the present Jerusalem, for she is in slavery with her children.

26ἡ δὲ ἄνω Ἰερουσαλὴμ ἐλευθέρα ἐστίν, ἥτις ἐστὶν μήτηρ ἡμῶν·

26But  k the Jerusalem above is free, and she is our mother.

27γέγραπται γάρ·

εὐφράνθητι, στεῖρα ἡ οὐ τίκτουσα,

ῥῆξον καὶ βόησον, ἡ οὐκ ὠδίνουσα·

ὅτι πολλὰ τὰ τέκνα τῆς ἐρήμου

μᾶλλον ἢ τῆς ἐχούσης τὸν ἄνδρα.

27For it is written,

 l “Rejoice, O barren one who does not bear;

break forth and cry aloud, you who are not in labor!

For the children of the desolate one will be more

than those of the one who has a husband.”

28Ὑμεῖς δέ, ἀδελφοί, κατὰ Ἰσαὰκ ἐπαγγελίας τέκνα ἐστέ.

28Now you, [6] brothers,  m like Isaac,  n are children of promise.

29ἀλλ’ ὥσπερ τότε ὁ κατὰ σάρκα γεννηθεὶς ἐδίωκεν τὸν κατὰ πνεῦμα, οὕτως καὶ νῦν.

29But just as at that time he who was born according to the flesh  o persecuted him who was born according to the Spirit,  p so also it is now.

30ἀλλὰ τί λέγει ἡ γραφή; ἔκβαλε τὴν παιδίσκην καὶ τὸν υἱὸν αὐτῆς· οὐ γὰρ μὴ κληρονομήσει ὁ υἱὸς τῆς παιδίσκης μετὰ τοῦ υἱοῦ τῆς ἐλευθέρας.

30But what does the Scripture say?  q “Cast out the slave woman and her son, for the son of the slave woman shall not inherit with the son of the free woman.”

31διό, ἀδελφοί, οὐκ ἐσμὲν παιδίσκης τέκνα ἀλλὰ τῆς ἐλευθέρας.

31So, brothers, we are not children of the slave but  r of the free woman.

Christ Has Set Us Free

ΠΡΟΣ ΓΑΛΑΤΑΣ 5 Τῇ ἐλευθερίᾳ ἡμᾶς Χριστὸς ἠλευθέρωσεν· στήκετε οὖν καὶ μὴ πάλιν ζυγῷ δουλείας ἐνέχεσθε.

GALATIANS 5 For  s freedom Christ has  t set us free;  u stand firm therefore, and do not submit again to  v a yoke of  w slavery.

2Ἴδε ἐγὼ Παῦλος λέγω ὑμῖν ὅτι ἐὰν περιτέμνησθε, Χριστὸς ὑμᾶς οὐδὲν ὠφελήσει.

2Look: I, Paul, say to you that  x if you accept circumcision,  y Christ will be of no advantage to you.

3μαρτύρομαι δὲ πάλιν παντὶ ἀνθρώπῳ περιτεμνομένῳ ὅτι ὀφειλέτης ἐστὶν ὅλον τὸν νόμον ποιῆσαι.

3I testify again to every man who accepts circumcision that  z he is obligated to keep the whole law.

4κατηργήθητε ἀπὸ Χριστοῦ, οἵτινες ἐν νόμῳ δικαιοῦσθε, τῆς χάριτος ἐξεπέσατε.

4You are  a severed from Christ,  b you who would be justified [1] by the law;  c you have fallen away from grace.

5ἡμεῖς γὰρ πνεύματι ἐκ πίστεως ἐλπίδα δικαιοσύνης ἀπεκδεχόμεθα.

5For through the Spirit, by faith, we ourselves eagerly  d wait for the hope of righteousness.

6ἐν γὰρ Χριστῷ Ἰησοῦ οὔτε περιτομή τι ἰσχύει οὔτε ἀκροβυστία ἀλλὰ πίστις δι’ ἀγάπης ἐνεργουμένη.

6For in Christ Jesus  e neither circumcision nor uncircumcision counts for anything, but  f only faith working through love.

7Ἐτρέχετε καλῶς· τίς ὑμᾶς ἐνέκοψεν [τῇ] ἀληθείᾳ μὴ πείθεσθαι;

7 g You were running well. Who hindered you from obeying  h the truth?

8ἡ πεισμονὴ οὐκ ἐκ τοῦ καλοῦντος ὑμᾶς.

8This persuasion is not from  i him who calls you.

9μικρὰ ζύμη ὅλον τὸ φύραμα ζυμοῖ.

9 j A little leaven leavens the whole lump.

10ἐγὼ πέποιθα εἰς ὑμᾶς ἐν κυρίῳ ὅτι οὐδὲν ἄλλο φρονήσετε· ὁ δὲ ταράσσων ὑμᾶς βαστάσει τὸ κρίμα, ὅστις ἐὰν ᾖ.

10 k I have confidence in the Lord that you will  l take no other view, and  m the one who is troubling you will bear the penalty, whoever he is.

11Ἐγὼ δέ, ἀδελφοί, εἰ περιτομὴν ἔτι κηρύσσω, τί ἔτι διώκομαι; ἄρα κατήργηται τὸ σκάνδαλον τοῦ σταυροῦ.

11But if I, brothers, [2] still preach [3] circumcision,  n why am I still being persecuted? In that case  o the offense of the cross has been removed.

12Ὄφελον καὶ ἀποκόψονται οἱ ἀναστατοῦντες ὑμᾶς.

12I wish  p those who unsettle you would emasculate themselves!

13Ὑμεῖς γὰρ ἐπ’ ἐλευθερίᾳ ἐκλήθητε, ἀδελφοί· μόνον μὴ τὴν ἐλευθερίαν εἰς ἀφορμὴν τῇ σαρκί, ἀλλὰ διὰ τῆς ἀγάπης δουλεύετε ἀλλήλοις.

13For you were called to freedom, brothers.  q Only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love  r serve one another.

14ὁ γὰρ πᾶς νόμος ἐν ἑνὶ λόγῳ πεπλήρωται, ἐν τῷ· ἀγαπήσεις τὸν πλησίον σου ὡς σεαυτόν.

14For  s the whole law is fulfilled in one word:  t “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.”

15εἰ δὲ ἀλλήλους δάκνετε καὶ κατεσθίετε, βλέπετε μὴ ὑπ’ ἀλλήλων ἀναλωθῆτε.

15But if you  u bite and devour one another, watch out that you are not consumed by one another.

Keep in Step with the Spirit

16Λέγω δέ, πνεύματι περιπατεῖτε καὶ ἐπιθυμίαν σαρκὸς οὐ μὴ τελέσητε.

16But I say,  v walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify  w the desires of the flesh.

17ἡ γὰρ σὰρξ ἐπιθυμεῖ κατὰ τοῦ πνεύματος, τὸ δὲ πνεῦμα κατὰ τῆς σαρκός, ταῦτα γὰρ ἀλλήλοις ἀντίκειται, ἵνα μὴ ἃ ἐὰν θέλητε ταῦτα ποιῆτε.

17For  x the desires of the flesh are against the Spirit, and the desires of the Spirit are against the flesh, for these are opposed to each other,  y to keep you from doing the things you want to do.

18εἰ δὲ πνεύματι ἄγεσθε, οὐκ ἐστὲ ὑπὸ νόμον.

18But if you are  z led by the Spirit,  a you are not under the law.

19φανερὰ δέ ἐστιν τὰ ἔργα τῆς σαρκός, ἅτινά ἐστιν πορνεία, ἀκαθαρσία, ἀσέλγεια,

19Now  b the works of the flesh are evident: sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality,

20εἰδωλολατρία, φαρμακεία, ἔχθραι, ἔρις, ζῆλος, θυμοί, ἐριθεῖαι, διχοστασίαι, αἱρέσεις,

20idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions,  c divisions,

21φθόνοι, μέθαι, κῶμοι καὶ τὰ ὅμοια τούτοις, ἃ προλέγω ὑμῖν, καθὼς προεῖπον ὅτι οἱ τὰ τοιαῦτα πράσσοντες βασιλείαν θεοῦ οὐ κληρονομήσουσιν.

21envy, [4] drunkenness, orgies, and things like these. I warn you, as I warned you before, that  d those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.

22ὁ δὲ καρπὸς τοῦ πνεύματός ἐστιν ἀγάπη χαρὰ εἰρήνη, μακροθυμία χρηστότης ἀγαθωσύνη, πίστις

22But  e the fruit of the Spirit is  f love, joy, peace, patience,  g kindness, goodness, faithfulness,

23πραΰτης ἐγκράτεια· κατὰ τῶν τοιούτων οὐκ ἔστιν νόμος.

23 h gentleness,  i self-control;  j against such things there is no law.

24οἱ δὲ τοῦ Χριστοῦ [Ἰησοῦ] τὴν σάρκα ἐσταύρωσαν σὺν τοῖς παθήμασιν καὶ ταῖς ἐπιθυμίαις.

24And those who belong to Christ Jesus  k have crucified the flesh with its  l passions and desires.

25Εἰ ζῶμεν πνεύματι, πνεύματι καὶ στοιχῶμεν.

25If we live by the Spirit,  m let us also keep in step with the Spirit.

26μὴ γινώμεθα κενόδοξοι, ἀλλήλους προκαλούμενοι, ἀλλήλοις φθονοῦντες.

26 n Let us not become conceited, provoking one another, envying one another.

Bear One Another’s Burdens

ΠΡΟΣ ΓΑΛΑΤΑΣ 6 Ἀδελφοί, ἐὰν καὶ προλημφθῇ ἄνθρωπος ἔν τινι παραπτώματι, ὑμεῖς οἱ πνευματικοὶ καταρτίζετε τὸν τοιοῦτον ἐν πνεύματι πραΰτητος, σκοπῶν σεαυτὸν μὴ καὶ σὺ πειρασθῇς.

GALATIANS 6 Brothers, [1]  o if anyone is caught in any transgression,  p you who are spiritual should restore him in  q a spirit of gentleness. Keep watch on yourself, lest you too be tempted.

2Ἀλλήλων τὰ βάρη βαστάζετε καὶ οὕτως ἀναπληρώσετε τὸν νόμον τοῦ Χριστοῦ.

2 r Bear one another’s burdens, and  s so fulfill  t the law of Christ.

3εἰ γὰρ δοκεῖ τις εἶναί τι μηδὲν ὤν, φρεναπατᾷ ἑαυτόν.

3For  u if anyone thinks he is something,  v when he is nothing, he deceives himself.

4τὸ δὲ ἔργον ἑαυτοῦ δοκιμαζέτω ἕκαστος, καὶ τότε εἰς ἑαυτὸν μόνον τὸ καύχημα ἕξει καὶ οὐκ εἰς τὸν ἕτερον·

4But let each one  w test his own work, and then his reason to boast will be in himself alone and not in his neighbor.

5ἕκαστος γὰρ τὸ ἴδιον φορτίον βαστάσει.

5For  x each will have to bear his own load.

6Κοινωνείτω δὲ ὁ κατηχούμενος τὸν λόγον τῷ κατηχοῦντι ἐν πᾶσιν ἀγαθοῖς.

6 y Let the one who is taught the word share all good things with the one who teaches.

7Μὴ πλανᾶσθε, θεὸς οὐ μυκτηρίζεται. ὃ γὰρ ἐὰν σπείρῃ ἄνθρωπος, τοῦτο καὶ θερίσει·

7 z Do not be deceived: God is not mocked, for  a whatever one sows, that will he also reap.

8ὅτι ὁ σπείρων εἰς τὴν σάρκα ἑαυτοῦ ἐκ τῆς σαρκὸς θερίσει φθοράν, ὁ δὲ σπείρων εἰς τὸ πνεῦμα ἐκ τοῦ πνεύματος θερίσει ζωὴν αἰώνιον.

8For  b the one who sows to his own flesh  c will from the flesh reap corruption, but  d the one who sows to the Spirit will from the Spirit reap eternal life.

9τὸ δὲ καλὸν ποιοῦντες μὴ ἐγκακῶμεν, καιρῷ γὰρ ἰδίῳ θερίσομεν μὴ ἐκλυόμενοι.

9And  e let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap,  f if we do not give up.

10Ἄρα οὖν ὡς καιρὸν ἔχομεν, ἐργαζώμεθα τὸ ἀγαθὸν πρὸς πάντας, μάλιστα δὲ πρὸς τοὺς οἰκείους τῆς πίστεως.

10So then,  g as we have opportunity, let us  h do good to everyone, and especially to those who are  i of the household of faith.

Final Warning and Benediction

11Ἴδετε πηλίκοις ὑμῖν γράμμασιν ἔγραψα τῇ ἐμῇ χειρί.

11See with what large letters I am writing to you  j with my own hand.

12Ὅσοι θέλουσιν εὐπροσωπῆσαι ἐν σαρκί, οὗτοι ἀναγκάζουσιν ὑμᾶς περιτέμνεσθαι, μόνον ἵνα τῷ σταυρῷ τοῦ Χριστοῦ μὴ διώκωνται.

12 k It is those who want to make a good showing in the flesh  l who would force you to be circumcised, and only  m in order that they may not be persecuted for the cross of Christ.

13οὐδὲ γὰρ οἱ περιτεμνόμενοι αὐτοὶ νόμον φυλάσσουσιν ἀλλὰ θέλουσιν ὑμᾶς περιτέμνεσθαι, ἵνα ἐν τῇ ὑμετέρᾳ σαρκὶ καυχήσωνται.

13For even those who are circumcised do not themselves keep the law, but they desire to have you circumcised that they may boast in your flesh.

14Ἐμοὶ δὲ μὴ γένοιτο καυχᾶσθαι εἰ μὴ ἐν τῷ σταυρῷ τοῦ κυρίου ἡμῶν Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ, δι’ οὗ ἐμοὶ κόσμος ἐσταύρωται κἀγὼ κόσμῳ.

14But far be it from me to boast  n except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by which [2] the world  o has been crucified to me, and I to the world.

15οὔτε γὰρ περιτομή τί ἐστιν οὔτε ἀκροβυστία ἀλλὰ καινὴ κτίσις.

15For  p neither circumcision counts for anything, nor uncircumcision, but  q a new creation.

16καὶ ὅσοι τῷ κανόνι τούτῳ στοιχήσουσιν, εἰρήνη ἐπ’ αὐτοὺς καὶ ἔλεος καὶ ἐπὶ τὸν Ἰσραὴλ τοῦ θεοῦ.

16And as for all who walk by this rule,  r peace and mercy be upon them, and upon  s the Israel of God.

17Τοῦ λοιποῦ κόπους μοι μηδεὶς παρεχέτω· ἐγὼ γὰρ τὰ στίγματα τοῦ Ἰησοῦ ἐν τῷ σώματί μου βαστάζω.

17From now on let no one cause me trouble, for I bear on my body the marks of Jesus.

18Ἡ χάρις τοῦ κυρίου ἡμῶν Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ μετὰ τοῦ πνεύματος ὑμῶν, ἀδελφοί· ἀμήν.

18 t The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be  u with your spirit, brothers. Amen.
