How to Determine Buttonhole Length

Measure width and height of button to be used. The sum of these measurements plus 1/8" (3 mm) for finishing the ends of the buttonhole is the correct length for a machine-worked buttonhole. The buttonhole must be large enough to button easily, yet snug enough so the garment stays closed.
