Afterword

Zachary King was wrong. But that is a tale for another time.

Historians of the fur trade have long wondered about conflicting accounts of a trading post on the Green River. Bridger and Smith said there was one; Walker and Meek make no mention of it. At last we know the truth. Once again the private journals of Nate King have come in handy.

No one disputes King’s long struggle against the most vicious killer grizzly in the history of North America. In a sense this book is a prelude to the story of Scar, as the bear became known. It is a riveting clash of man versus beast the likes of which we have seldom seen. Before it was over, more than forty Utes and other victims were dead. Yes, you read correctly. Over forty. In the annals of animal attacks, the havoc Scar wreaked almost rivals the carnage caused by the fabled Beast of Gevaudan.

And that is our tale for next time.
