Life on the Creek

Crawdads hiding in a hole,

Nightcrawlers dangling from a pole,

A towhead boy with his dog heads to the creek,

Looking for a catfish meal to eat.

Watching that cork bobble up and down,

Waiting for that catfish he’s sure he’s found,

Wondering when he’ll see that telltale twitch,

That’ll scratch his stomach’s hungry itch.

Chasing butterflies by daylight,

Walking on moon beams by night.

Watching Mr. Raccoon by the water’s beat,

Washing what he’s about to eat.

Ole man possum’s up on the bank,

Wishing he were down to get a drink.

Honeysuckle vines all around,

Some climbing up, some climbing down.

Bees buzzing along the creek,

Looking for flowers to make their treat.

Some find honey, others get stuck.

On bullfrog’s tongue, they run out of luck.

Snake doctors darting here and there,

Looking for a mate everywhere.

Ole man turtle’s sunning on a log,

Watching the boy and his dog.

A bounty of life for a boy to explore,

Waiting not far outside his door.

A place to grow and find the way,

To learn of life and death each day. &
