The number of copies sold includes book club editions published in the UK, but not foreign editions or translations, the paperback (unless otherwise stated) or the Bloomsbury reprints. ‘Editions’ usually differ from reprints or ‘impressions’ in that they incorporate more substantial revisions involving a degree or resetting. In practice, though, some of the new editions incorporated little, if any, revision. I have in each case followed the sequence printed on the half-title of each book, which we must accept as definitive, even if it is occasionally inaccurate. The foreign editions and translations listed may not be complete. I would be interested to learn of any others that have come to the reader’s attention.
