When he landed back on the roof and climbed over the window sill, he could see a pair of accusing brown eyes looking up at him, and a tail whisking the darkness. Slugger barked and whined and shifted from one foot to the other and barked again.

‘Sorry, Slugger,’ he said, stepping over the sill. ‘Next time, I’ll take you with me, I promise.’

Slugger barked.
