Secret 6

What Breaks the Empath?

It was near 20 years ago when I started looking for answers and ways to heal myself. In the beginning I wanted to have the answers there and then. I believed I would be healed overnight by one of the many holistic therapies I was discovering. I didn’t get the answers or the healing I wanted for a long time. My younger naïve-self had much to learn. I now realize, for very good reason.

Had I only had to make one change to heal from all I endured, I would not have learnt all I have. I made many astounding discoveries on my journey. And armed with this knowledge I am now on a mission to help others like me. I want you to know what I learnt so you too can turn your life around and become the happiest, healthiest version of yourself… without it taking twenty years. You deserve the most amazing life. And you can achieve it!

I see life as a brilliant and remarkable voyage and a fast-paced rollercoaster ride. If life were an easy, comfortable trip we would not get the sense of accomplishment from overcoming the many obstacles we do. We climb mountains, float on clouds and stumble into darkness; sometimes all in one day. It is these experiences that make our journeys so interesting and worthwhile.

I have not got all the answers to life, nor would I yet want to; we have to leave something to learn on life’s path. But the most important detail I have learnt to date is: we will never find true health, peace or happiness until we heal the trinity of mind, body and spirit.

The mind is our thoughts, ego and emotions. The body is our physical vessel. And the spirit is our eternal, higher-self or soul.

We are all different. Each exceptional in our mind, body and spirit and what works for one does not always work for another. We are as unique as a snowflake. What we each need to do to get or stay in balance can differ greatly. We live in a world where we are expected to be the same in the way we behave, look, think and live, and are given the same dietary and exercise advice. We are encouraged to have the same goals, and expected to get equal benefit from the same education or medical treatment. Even in the New Age arena it can be a one-size-fits-all and an “if it worked for me it should work for you” approach. If something does not work for us, we are often blamed for not trying hard enough.

Being so different we need to discover for ourselves what works to heal and balance us. Some people need speeding up, some need slowing down. Some will benefit from a high protein diet, some a high-carbohydrate diet. Some need to get out of their heads, some need to get inside their heads. Some need routine and rules. Others need space and freedom to create their life. Because we are different in so many ways, the path for us to connect our mind, body and spirit is unique to us. However, for the Empath there are some specific health-steps we all need to take. These steps apply to us all because of our brain chemistry.

On my evolutionary journey of developing my Empath and life skills, I have gone full circle. When I first began my voyage to heal and balance myself, I did so following government and mainstream health advice. I ate a high fiber, low-fat diet and exercised… I got no better and continued searching.

Next, I studied and practiced many holistic techniques such as color and crystal therapy; reflexology and aromatherapy etc. I became a better person but only got temporary relief from the myriad of symptoms I experienced.

During my studies I also developed my spirituality and started a regular yoga and meditation practice. In doing this I saw many benefits to both my body and mind. But I still wasn’t cured nor was I able to understand all I felt.

When I discovered I was an Empath it was a huge “aha” moment. Everything about my life now made sense. I then thought I knew exactly what to do to heal myself. Yet, I did not get better. I still struggled with life and many things about it. I did not feel happy or healthy. I could not control all I felt, and still suffered with crushing fatigue. Even though I understood why I was the way I was, I could not change it; even after taking all the steps to ground, protect and re-balance myself. It took many years to find out why…

During my yoga and metaphysical studies, I also studied the chakras. Where they are located, how they work, what unbalances and blocks them. Although I learnt much about their workings, what I discovered was not written with the Empath in mind. Nor were they wrote taking modern diet into consideration. Being an Empath disrupts our mental, physical and energetic functions; as does our diet. I came to discover I could not develop or truly understand the gift of being an Empath because my hormones and chakras were out-of-balance. This was because my diet was affecting my brain chemistry. After listening to my inner-knowing I changed my diet, and this is when amazing things happened! I saw exactly how our hormones affect our physical and mental health and our chakras. I also learnt that our brain plays a gigantic part in the way an Empath shows up in the world.

Until we balance our brain, hormones and chakras our lives will remain challenging and unbalanced. We will delve a little deeper into understanding chakras and the endocrine glands shortly, but for now we will look at balancing the trinity of mind, body and spirit.

Trinity Healing

We come as a trinity package of mind, body and spirit. For healing we have to work on all three to find complete balance. There are some who can work on one area and be healed in total. For example: one person may have emotional scars brought forward from previous lives, which are healed through past-life regression (spirit). Another may find blocked chakras, caused by a childhood trauma, dissolved after a series of crystal therapy sessions (spirit or mind). Another may have a busy and angry mind, cured by a daily meditation practice (mind). For another, a regular yoga practice may calm the nervous system; healing a stress-related illness (body).

These practices can bring about “trinity healing” when only one or two areas of the trinity are imbalanced. Not everyone is imbalanced in all three but most Empaths will be. An Empath’s Sensitivity and heightened emotions affect their brain chemistry and hormones (see next Secret). Any one hormone being out-of-sync has a knock-on-effect on all the other hormone-producing glands.

Certain foods have been scientifically proven to have a drug-like effect on the human brain. This effect can disrupt the hormones natural cycle. The Empath is already vulnerable to hormonal imbalance and for this reason it is essential they address their diet.

In the early days when I ate what I thought was a “healthy diet” I saw no change in my health or frame of mind. Because of this I came to believe the answers to healing must lie in the metaphysical. I thought if I made myself more “spiritual” my life would transform. I was not aware as I sat in meditation and performed yoga each day that if I was putting poison into my body, no amount of spiritual practice would balance me. Back then, the only poison I thought was going into my body was alcohol. I was wrong. Alcohol is a very damaging drug; but we know it’s a drug and we can see the damage it causes soon after consumption. I was consuming a drug-like food without knowing what damage it was causing. The most profound changes happened for me when I eliminated this drug-like food: wheat!

The Grain Secretly Poisoning You

You would have to live deep underground to not have heard about the amazing transformations people are having after eliminating wheat (and not just Sensitive folk). It is shameful it has taken so long for it to come to light just how bad it is for the body and mind. If you are thinking wheat cannot be all bad because it has been around for centuries and is a staple in the Western diet; you are not aware of this fact: wheat is not what it used to be. It has been genetically altered by scientists to make it more resilient to weather and bugs. These changes have made it destructive to our health. Since the mid-eighties we have been eating a hybridized version of the crop. This also coincides with the rise of the obesity, depression and diabetes epidemics.

Although wheat is hailed as a health food it acts like a drug and has been scientifically proven to have a drug-like effect on the brain. It is being linked with many mental and physical illnesses.

When wheat was genetically altered its protein structure was changed. Now, when digested, wheat breaks down into many small proteins that can cross the blood-brain barrier. These tiny proteins attach themselves to the opiate receptors of the brain. This has the effect of a narcotic, but without the pleasurable high. It has been scientifically proven to encourage overeating and trigger or worsen mental illnesses. For Empaths, it will heighten their addictive personality, their emotional state and impact their already unbalanced brain chemistry.

Mind-Altering Food

Wheat has the power to alter our perception and natural instincts. Not only affecting how much we eat, but what we eat. It switches off our dietary intuition designed to protect us from choosing foods and substances damaging to our health.

If you include it in your diet, then wheat is controlling you more than you could ever know. And not just in your dietary choices. It may play a part in other addictive behaviors and is linked to controlling moods. Until you take it out of your diet completely, then and only then will you see how it ruled your mind, moods and weight.

Sensitive people react more to drug-like foods, such as wheat, because we are highly reactive. High reactive people taste the bitterness in lemons more. They feel emotional and physical pain more. They will blush easier and are affected by drugs and alcohol worse than those who are not highly reactive.

High reactives respond to different vibrations of energy. Everything is energy vibrating at different frequencies. This includes food, drugs or alcohol. The faster they vibrate, the higher the frequency. Empaths can be negatively affected by anything of a low vibration. Most drugs and alcohol have a low vibrational energy and will bring the Empath down fast. Wheat is not classed as a drug, but it very much acts like one. Therefore, it carries the same energy signature.

Like everything in life, some will be affected in different ways by modern wheat. If you are one who practices self-help such as meditation, pranayama and exercise and you still struggle with issues, check your diet. Low moods, lethargy, digestive issues and depression and more, are linked to wheat. You may not eat bread, but you could still consume lots of it. Wheat is hidden in many foods for the reason it keeps us consuming more of it.

Drug-Like Action of Wheat

When I explain to others the remarkable changes that happened in my life, just by eliminating wheat, I see their eyes glaze over. I can feel them go within themselves. I understand they do not want to hear the benefits of wheat elimination because they do not want to give it up. They do not comprehend that being a drug, they are addicted to wheat and it is actually their addiction creating the resistance. If I told them eliminating apples would turn their life around, most wouldn’t think twice about ditching them… because apples aren’t addictive.

Many Empaths believe our mental and physical maladies are due to absorbing too much negative energy. Or we may blame ascension symptoms. Some may be caused by the above but they are worsened by what we consume. I found much of my emotional “Empath stuff” was caused by wheat proteins. I appreciate not everyone will have the same life-changing benefits I did, or the thousands of others who also eliminated wheat. But by eliminating it, it could turn your life around.

Humans are ready to evolve and raise their vibration. Evolving means to unite mind, body and spirit. We can only do this by removing from our life anything of a low vibration. This means eliminating anything that affects the smooth running of our brain and body. When we eliminate everything which alters our mood and perception, we see amazing changes in our life, fact! Doing so will plug you back into your innate intuition. This will clear your vision and allow your true path to be revealed. Giving up wheat was the catalyst for a total life-transformation for me. By removing this single grain from my diet has seen many dramatic changes to my life; and removed a drug I did not know I was consuming. I could also see how other foods were affecting my health. Within a year of removing wheat I had completely changed my diet and stopped drinking alcohol. I am happier and more confident than I have ever been in my entire adult life.

When you remove wheat from your diet you can then see just how much it controlled your moods, appetite and mind. It will also allow you to see what other changes need to be made. Your body may take a while to heal from a lifetime’s consumption of wheat. But the good news is your mind heals very quickly and your intuition kicks up several notches.

If you do it make sure you eliminate wheat 100%. Reducing your intake by 75% or even 80% will not see the changes you want. You may feel better for a while, but the addiction will still be there. The amount of wheat you eat will creep back up until you are eating the same amount you were, if not more. This will also reinforce your addiction to wheat. Your mind will then do anything to stop you from giving up wheat again. Eliminate wheat 100% for four weeks and see for yourself the amazing changes.

By changing your diet and tuning into your body’s needs, it allows your true Self to emerge. Foods that act like drugs cause all humans damage. To the Empaths, who already have hormone and chemical imbalances, drug-like foods are destructive. Wheat is not the only drug-like food that Empaths should avoid the other is refined sugar.

Refined Sugar and the Empath

As you will be aware, white sugar has no nutritional value. It is a toxic sweetener linked with diabetes, premature aging, obesity and many other diseases. Having a similar effect on the brain as wheat, white sugar acts as an opiate and triggers physical and mental disorders.

We have to remember the sole purpose of food is to provide our bodies with nourishment and fuel to stay alive. As refined sugar has no nutrients, it has no benefit being included in our diet. Refined sugar is worse for the body and mind than cocaine, and more addictive. Yet it is in most processed foods. Just like with wheat, when you’ve kicked the habit and got sugar out of the system, the addiction is gone for good. Have a small amount of it though and you will be back where you started.

White sugar acts as an inflammatory. If you have any health problems refined sugar will make them worse. Just because your body may look healthy on the outside does not mean there are no health problems within. Removing sugar from your diet acts as a safeguard against illness.

Wheat and refined sugars rob the body of essential nutrients and enzymes. An imbalance of just one nutrient or enzyme can cause illness and depression. It can plunge you into the depths of despair, cause chronic fatigue and sleepless nights. It can also lead to a low-quality of life. I would not have believed this had I not witnessed such a transformation within myself.

Without enzymes we would cease to exist. They keep us alive, nourish our bodies and keep our mind healthy. As we age, our enzyme production decreases. This, coupled with a bad diet, puts us on a fast-tracked-path to mental and physical illness. This is why it is important to keep our enzyme consumption high and eliminate foods that strip them, such as wheat and sugar. Enzymes are found in all fruits and vegetables; but are especially abundant when the food is in its raw state. They can also be purchased in supplement form.

Giving up much loved foods, such as wheat and sugar, is not a simple task. I know. Your mind will fight to keep them in your diet. However, once out of the system, those cravings subside and you will not miss them. You will be amazed at just how fantastic you can feel. For those who have suffered a lifelong battle with ailments, allergies, fatigue and illness, you will be astounded just how much they affected you.

When you give up any drug-like food or drink your body will go through withdrawal symptoms; normally lasting from a few days up to a few weeks. I will list some of the symptoms you can expect to endure in the Tools section. I will also list ways in which to deal with them.

Modern diets and lifestyles have taken too many people down without them realizing it. Empaths are already vulnerable to anything that lowers their vibration. It is essential all foods that have a drug-like effect on the body and mind are eliminated. If you want to heal yourself and discover what your true role in life is, eliminate any artificial, genetically modified or hybridized foods.

The root cause of many problems in both body and mind is what we feed on. The low-fat, high grain/sugar diet we have been consuming these past thirty years has turned us into zombies; only capable of following the herd. Until we clean up our diet we will not find our true purpose or reach the enlightened state many of us are striving for.

For health and wellbeing, Empaths are already at a huge disadvantage because of what they take on from others. Because of this we have to be extra vigilante with our diets. Too often, the debilitating feelings many are experiencing (Sensitive or not), mentally and physically, are blamed on ascension symptoms, past traumas and external energies. But believe me, they are not all caused by that. Most are caused by drug-like foods or from eating foods that the body can no longer tolerate. Only when you clean up your diet will you understand just how much of what you eat hinders your health, spiritual progress and happiness.

The Most Toxic Indulgences for the Empath

I have explained two of these toxic indulgences, wheat and refined sugar. The third is alcohol. Alcohol makes you fearful and holds you back in life more than you could ever imagine. I dislike being a killjoy but these three indulgences, wheat, refined sugar and alcohol, will suppress you and your abilities. You will only come to discover how destructive they are when you eliminate them.

Sensitive people do not do well on any drug-like food or drink, and until they are out of the system you will not excel in life. I write this from experience. I used to consume all three and I cannot tell you how much my life has transformed since eliminating them.

Any kind of stimulant will only serve in weakening the Empath; as they do any other human.

Alcohol: Why It Holds Us Back!

Many Empaths use alcohol and drugs to block out other people’s emotions, especially at social events. I can categorically state it does not and will never work! Under the influence, it may feel like the emotions off others are being blocked out, but this is not the case. Alcohol does not block other people’s energy. If anything it enhances their effect on you and will leave you filled with fear and ill-feelings for days after. How do I know? I drank for thirty years of my life. Now I no longer imbibe, I can see exactly what effect it has on Empaths!

Most Empaths are introvert in nature. Introverts dislike small talk. They need their conversations to have depth and meaning. They do not fare well in the type of “social environments” the rest of the extrovert world thrives on. These types of events are just hard-work and make the Empath feel drained or overworked. Because the social traits of an introvert Empath are not seen as acceptable in this extrovert world, many turn to alcohol to help them when in social situations. This they may hope will aid the conversations in being deemed “socially acceptable”. But this will not make the Empath happy, because they are not being true to themselves.

Because we use alcohol to help us through social events we become dependent. We then believe we cannot have a good time without alcohol. The thought of giving it up fills us with dread, because we believe alcohol helps us cope when in social settings and allows us to have fun. When we become aware of being an Empath we realize the reason we drink alcohol is to handle being in certain peoples’ presence for any length of time. We also drink to block out other people’s emotions and to numb pain. Whatever our reasons, if we need to drink alcohol regularly it is a dependency.

When I was younger I had fun times whilst drinking alcohol at parties. I liked the social scene. But the more alcohol I drank the weaker and more fearful I became (although I had no idea of this at the time). After the age of twenty-five my main reason for drinking was to give me the ability to be around people comfortably. It helped me engage with those I had nothing in common with. Or just to be able to be in certain peoples’ presence. I did not understand that being an Empath I would never enjoy being around large groups of people. It was part of my nature to need down-time, but no one had taught me this. I thought I was just shy or lacking in confidence. I believed alcohol gave me confidence. It didn’t, it just made me feel bad all the time.

The older I got, the more my introvert Empath traits kicked in and the less I enjoyed the party lifestyle. I was torn. I did not get pleasure from the social scene but felt I should stay part of it. To get through a social event I used alcohol.

I believed alcohol made me more social and thus happier. The only thing alcohol brought to my life was fear, fear and more fear. I feared being judged. I feared not fitting in and I feared people not liking me for who I really was. These are all normal fears, and a natural part of social and tribal acceptance. The problem was these fears were heightened tenfold by alcohol. I could not find my true-self. Not because of all the Empath stuff I had to deal with, but because alcohol was holding me back.

Drinking alcohol will not bring you peace of mind. It is not a release valve. It does not help you relax after a long day at work. These are just illusions and what we tell ourselves to justify our drinking habits. Alcohol makes us ill, overweight, anxious, scared and fearful. It will heighten any negative emotion we have within and those we pick up off others. Alcohol will hold you back from taking risks in life or stepping from your comfort zone. If we reach for alcohol every time we feel uncomfortable, it blocks any chance of growth or self-development.

When I look around I see the one constant that connects people is alcohol. This makes me sad.

The reason I gave up alcohol was because I was fed up of feeling rubbish all the time. By giving up wheat I could see how damaging alcohol was. I knew it was not making me happy… far from it. I listened to my intuition, which for too long I had ignored; telling me it was okay to give up alcohol. I had no idea how fearful alcohol was making me or how much it held me back, until I gave it up. My life has now transformed. I have never felt this contented in adult life. Alcohol suppresses the parts of our brain responsible for joy and happiness. We drink alcohol to have fun but the irony is, alcohol takes away our ability to have natural fun.

Like attracts like! If you are fearful and drink alcohol guess what you will feel more of? Even drinking just two glasses of wine a week is enough to keep you in fear. Giving up the booze does not have to be difficult. It is as simple as deciding you want to transform your life and reach your true potential. You may have to give up your social life for a while. Four weeks is normally all it takes to get the drug out of your body. But it is so worth it.

When you give up alcohol be prepared to face a backlash. Others will detest the fact you are kicking a habit they are dependent on and will often try to talk you out of it. It is your life. You cannot drink to please others.

Giving up wheat, refined sugar and alcohol will transform your life and health, fact!

It is difficult to find lasting happiness unless you are healthy. You will never have a healthy body or mind if you eat drug-like foods. This is why it is essential to address your diet.

Caffeine is another drug we eventually have to remove from our life but we will get to that in the next secret. Now, whilst we are on the subject of how your diet affects your health and wellbeing, I would just like to cover the subject of autoimmune disease:

The Empath and Autoimmune Disease

Autoimmunity is becoming a 21st century curse with more and more people being diagnosed.

In America alone it is said there are at least 50 million people suffering with autoimmune disease. Anyone and everyone is at risk. But those with a genetic predisposition are a third more likely to develop one.

There are varying factors in developing autoimmune disease but one of the known triggers is stress and emotional overload. It is this factor which makes Empaths more at risk.

Autoimmune disease is caused by the immune system losing the ability to differentiate between proteins belonging to your own body (like the organs, glands and muscles), and proteins belonging to a foreign invader such as bacteria, viruses and parasites. One of the most commonly known autoimmune diseases is Celiac, an extreme intolerance to gluten. If someone with Celiac consumes gluten the immune system attacks not only the gluten proteins in the body, but the intestinal wall. This leads to excessive stomach pain, chronic diarrhea or constipation, an inability to absorb essential nutrients and many other problems. However, not all autoimmune diseases are that obvious. Having fatigue, exhaustion, cold hands and feet, joint pain, weight problems, sore throat, eczema, psoriasis, headaches, any bowel complaint, mental disorders, low moods and depression can all be caused by autoimmune disease.

To see if you are at risk of having autoimmune disease see the following questions. If you answer yes to one or more of these questions you are higher risk.

These questions include common symptoms of several autoimmune diseases.

Did you have asthma or allergies as a child?

Have you ever had acne, dermatitis, eczema or psoriasis?

Have you suffered with digestive disturbances: IBS, constipation, Crohns or Celiac?

Do you experience chronic fatigue?

Have you got hormonal imbalances?

Have you been diagnosed with Diabetes?

Have you been diagnosed with a thyroid disorder?

Do you have weight problems?

Are you excessively introvert?

Do you have joint, muscle or back problems?

Do you suffer headaches?

Do you have hay fever?

Do you have arthritis or arthritic pain?

Do you have high cholesterol?

Do you get excessively hot or cold?

Do you have white spots or patches on your skin?

Do you suffer thinning hair?

Do you struggle to sleep at night even though you are tired?

Do you suffer low moods, depression or find your mood fluctuates?

One difficulty when trying to identify autoimmune disorders is they are difficult to diagnose (it can take years to get an accurate diagnosis). The symptoms can be similar from one autoimmune disease to another.

Generally, wherever there is an autoimmune disease there will also be leaky gut syndrome. This means there is an increase in permeability of the intestinal lining and large gaps form between the cells of the colon. These gaps allow undigested food particles, proteins, toxins and bacteria into the bloodstream. When this material gets into the bloodstream the immune system kicks in to get it out and this can be the start of an autoimmune disease.

Hippocrates, the father of medicine, is known to have said: all disease begins in the gut. This is proving to be accurate.

What Causes Leaky Gut?

There are many causes of a permeable intestinal lining. The most common being: stress, antibiotics and medications, Candida, alcohol, allergies, celiac disease, gluten and wheat intolerance, parasites, diet, and autoimmune disease. Autoimmune disease can cause leaky gut syndrome and vice versa. A leaky gut can trigger other autoimmune diseases.

Once you have a leaky gut or autoimmune disease there are many foods that can trigger a flare-up because of their proteins or lectins. Wheat and refined sugar are high on the list for causing and triggering an attack. Here are some others: grains, gluten, dairy, alcohol, eggs, nuts and seeds, legumes (including soya), alcohol, potatoes, eggplants, tomatoes, chilies, and processed foods.

Telltale Signs

If you work to balance the mind, body and spirit and have removed alcohol, wheat and sugar from your diet yet still suffer with physical ailments, consider the possibility you may have autoimmune disorder. Autoimmune can be diagnosed by a specialist or a good functional medicine practitioner.

We are all here for a reason and each have a purpose to fulfill. If you are being poisoned by the food you eat you will never reach your true potential. The fear, anxiety, brain fog, intense fatigue, depression and emotional overload certain foods can cause (on top of all the “Empath stuff”) will hold you back from whatever it is you are here to do. You will not have the energy or inclination to take part in any kind of life-fulfilling role. Stress is a trigger for autoimmune flare-ups. This leaves the Empath vulnerable because they process other people’s as well as their own.

The good news is if you suffer food intolerances or autoimmune disorder you will see life changing results from removing trigger foods from your diet.

Addictive Foods

If you want to know the foods to eliminate it is the food you think you cannot live without. Most specialists working in this field agree: if you resist giving up certain foods it is likely you are intolerant to them.

Addictive foods often cause the worst health problems. As well as wheat and sugar, I was also resistant to giving up potatoes. I could not imagine life without them. The thought of never tucking into a mound of creamy mashed potatoes or devouring a fat, jacket potato filled me with anxiety. But the cleaner my diet got the more I understood what a problem they were for me. Whenever I ate them I would suffer bouts of depression or suffer fatigue for a few days after consumption.

You may find it interesting to note the most problematic foods are the ones sold on every street corner. Chips, fries, bagels, cookies, coffee, burgers, sweet and savory snacks are just a sample. They contain either wheat, sugar, potatoes or caffeine and all have a drug-like effect on the body. They also affect our chakras. Until we rebalance our chakras, and thus endocrine glands, we will not find equilibrium.

Chakras and Endocrine Glands

Chakras are energy centers located along the central energy canal of the spine, in correlation with the endocrine system.

The word chakra means wheel or circle and can be translated into vortex or whirlpool.

Chakras are the vortices which control the pranic energy within the body. They are considered to be energetic glands that represent a physical endocrine gland.

Chakras and Their Linking Glands

Root or base chakra: adrenals

Sacral chakra: ovaries/testes

Solar plexus chakra: pancreas

Heart chakra: thymus

Throat chakra: thyroid/parathyroid

Third eye chakra: pineal

Crown chakra: pituitary

Keep the Chakras Balanced

Ancient yogis have known for thousands of years the connection between our chakras and endocrine glands. They knew when our chakras are in balance so would be the endocrine system and vice versa.

Modern lifestyles work against the body and its energy centers.

The endocrine system is a collection of glands within the body that secrete more than 20 different hormones into the bloodstream. These hormones are like chemical messengers. Each one has its own purpose. They work independently but also synergistically within the body.

You may not be familiar with the endocrine system but you will be familiar with some of the glands and the hormones they secrete. The pineal gland secretes melatonin and serotonin. The thyroid secretes thyroxin. Adrenals produce adrenaline. And the pancreas releases insulin; the testes and ovaries secrete estrogen and testosterone.

Our endocrine glands react to specific stimuli and will release hormones so the body can carry out a certain function. For example, in darkness the pineal gland will produce melatonin. This is known as the sleep hormone and tells the body it is time to sleep. In times of fear the adrenals will ramp up production of adrenaline, which gives us the strength to run away from a dangerous situation. When we consume starchy carbohydrates and sugars our pancreas releases insulin, the body uses it to remove excess sugar from our bloodstream to use for energy or to be stored as fat.

Our chemical messengers have their own functions with the organs and tissues of the body but they also work together. When one goes out-of-balance it will have a knock-on-effect on the others. Modern diets and lifestyles create a discord within the endocrine system. Certain foods or stimulants encourage excessive production of particular hormones. Wheat or sugar can cause an overproduction of insulin. And too much sugar or coffee (caffeine) will produce excess cortisol and adrenaline. These not only act as a catalyst for weight gain but also offset other glands. This happening every now and again is not a problem. But for most people it is happening every day.

An overproduction of hormones, such as adrenaline or cortisol, causes a fearful state. When we are gripped by fear our thoughts darken. This ignites a fear-loop. Because poor drug-like food makes us anxious this then produces more stress hormones. The body is then tricked into believing there is a real danger. It responds by flooding the system with adrenaline to give a rush energy, energy which is not needed. The body has been put on high alert for no reason. And the cycle continues. As you would imagine this is the last thing an Empath needs as they are already overstimulated by heightened emotions.

An out-of-balance endocrine and chakra system weakens the entire body and mind.

There are some who will scoff at the concept or existence of chakras. Because they cannot be seen with the physical eye, some believe they are fictional. Many need proof before they will accept something as true. There is no “scientific proof” that yoga helps heal the body and mind, but the millions of people who practice it for its health benefits should be proof enough. They practice because they have experienced yoga’s curative power for themselves and are testimony to its many healing benefits.

The Overstimulated Mind

It is not just our diet that puts our energy glands out-of-balance. Stress and negative thought patterns are equally problematic. Untamed, negative thoughts turn into painful emotions. These emotions travel to the parts of the body associated with certain fears and weaken that area.

It is easy to understand how our thoughts turn into emotions, which then affect the body. If we command our heart to beat faster, it won’t do it. But if you imagine being followed, by a ghostly figure, down a dark, lonely pathway, this will speed up the heart. We can also stimulate our emotions through our thoughts. If we continuously think about injustices against us it will stir up emotions. Anger is a typical emotion rattled by thought and is normally felt around the stomach or heart. Experience this emotion regularly and it will lead to disorders of that area, the corresponding chakra and endocrine gland.

Depending on the Sensitivity of a person will depend on the speed which disorders show up in the body. High reactive people, like Empaths, will get sicker sooner than those who feel less and have a thicker skin. And this is another reason we have to be vigilant about keeping our chakras balanced.

Chakras can be open, closed, blocked or imbalanced. Ideally, when healthy, they should open and close naturally and not be stuck or blocked. They are affected by personal trauma, anxiety and stress, and can be forced permanently open by the regular use of drugs, or drug-like food, medications, excessive alcohol and smoking, and unresolved emotional pain. If they remain open the Empath is even more vulnerable to the energy of others. The last thing they need.

The Empath’s energy centers are already susceptible to the emotions we have to deal with, not only ours but from others too. If we use alcohol and drugs, or if we eat food that acts like drugs, it can force our chakras open. Open energy centers are bad news!

Stored emotional wounds can be cleared from the chakras by practicing a powerful chakra clearing meditation (see Tools section), but we also have to balance them by changing our lifestyle. Most Sensitive folk already have an inkling what they should avoid from their diet. Unfortunately, we don’t always listen to our Knowing when it comes to healing our own body and mind. When we ignore our intuition we are just making life more difficult. We are at the helm of our own ships. No one can force us to make a change. Nor will change happen without us first taking the steps. When we commit to making essential, sometimes uncomfortable, changes our lives transform.

If you want to see real magic happen within your life get rid of what holds you back! Once you embark on this journey of self-healing through cleaning up your diet and re-balancing you mind, you will be astounded at how your life will shift gears. Your intuition and happiness will increase and information will present itself as and when needed.

We have to work at making changes to free our mind, heal our body and engage our spirit. The changes may be uncomfortable but only for a little while. We may think we want the easy path but it rarely ends up being easy. Great, amazing and valuable lessons can be learnt from enduring difficult and challenging times. We only find true freedom from emotional or physical pains by bringing into balance our mind, body and spirit.

The take-home message of this Secret is if you want to see BIG changes in your life, change your diet!
