The following is a list, largely, of books referred to within the text. Although there are a small number of texts included which are not directly referred to in footnotes, this is not a full bibliography.
There are different bodies of theoretical writing represented here—film, fiction, literary theory, cultural studies theory and so on—but I have not divided the listing into such categories. Given the nature of the study, its interdisciplinary focus, the problems of overlap and cross reference would have made this list of references unwieldy.
Finally, while print texts are listed in the traditional form, alphabetically by author, films have been listed alphabetically by title. The name of the director follows the title and date of release.
