To help cyclists find safe and interesting places to ride, the Bicycle Program of the North Carolina Department of Transportation has identified primary and secondary roads that are relatively safe because of low traffic volume and good roadway conditions. Various routes encompassing over 3,000 miles have been mapped. Others will be available in the future.
Sample routes:
Mountains-to-Sea—700 miles from Murphy to Manteo
Piedmont Spur—200-mile east-west route
Carolina Connection—200-mile north-south route
Ports of Call—300 miles in the coastal area
Cape Fear Run—160 miles from Raleigh to the Cape Fear area
Ocracoke Option—175 miles from the Wilson area to the Cedar Island ferry
Southern Highlands—120 miles from the Blue Ridge Parkway to Lincolnton
