Paperclay Slabs

Roll out paperclay and stamp into it with a texture plate, embossed wallpaper or any mark-making tool. Speed up the drying process by flipping it over when one side is dry. Making your textured pieces on a polypropylene cutting board will prevent any warping and will allow the clay to peel off easily. You can trim the clay when it is either damp or dry. When it is completely dry, you can sand it and do almost any surface treatment to it.

STEP ONE: Roll out paperclay and cut into a rectangle. Brush a piece of painted Masonite or plywood with some water and press the clay slab onto it. Trim clay to fit the backing and make marks with whichever tools you choose.

STEP TWO: Draw a simple animal shape on paper and cut it out. Trace and cut the shape from a rolled slab of clay.

STEP THREE: Adhere the shape to the base clay using brushed-on water.

STEP FOUR: Add more marks to the animal shape, and cut out and add star shapes and words stamped into the clay.

STEP FIVE: When the clay is completely dry, paint it with a dark color. When the paint is dry, brush on and then wipe off a lighter acrylic glaze.
