CHAPTER TWELVE

Paperclay

HOUSE OF THE RISING SUN

Darlene Olivia McElroy

Cast and embossed paperclay, deconstructed fiber paste stencils.

What artist doesn’t love texture? With paperclay, it is very easy to add dimension to your art, plus paperclay is so much fun to use. It takes textures and marks from texture plates, stamps and clay tools beautifully. When dry, it becomes a hard yet absorbent surface that is heaven to paint on. Think of the fun you will have trying different painting techniques on the dry clay! A bonus is that paperclay also sticks well to almost any surface if you want to apply it directly to your art surface as an alternative. If you want raised cast collage elements, create them with molds using a two-part molding putty. Add the paperclay to an armature for three-dimensional pieces or make jewelry using it. This versatile product works well with craft projects as well as fine art. The clay takes about 24 hours to dry.
