At craft supply stores and online you will find a vast array of premade paper mache forms that come in all kinds of different shapes. These rigid, kraft paper–covered shapes can be easily cut and altered, and they make a great base for covering with a powdered paper mache mixed with water to a thick claylike consistency. While the paper mache is still wet, it can be stamped to create some wonderful surface textures and embellishments, and letters can be added. Model facial features onto a mask form, model a fantasy dress onto a dress form, or give your heart wings!
STEP ONE: Cut a square opening in a store-bought paper mache heart.
STEP TWO: Glue a wood block to the bottom inside the opening. Then glue a small box onto the wood block to fill the opening.
STEP THREE: Add powdered paper mache (mixed with water to a thick, claylike consistency) to the heart and stamp on a pattern.
STEP FOUR: Once it’s dry, cover the heart with acrylic paint and let dry. Then drybrush to highlight raised areas. Let it dry.
STEP FIVE: Mix a dark color of acrylic paint with acrylic glaze medium. Brush on and wipe off excess to leave a dark glaze in recessed areas.
STEP SIX: Pour some clear resin or epoxy glue into the small box and place the wings in the box. Adhere letters with premium white glue, E6000 or epoxy glue.
