Cast paper mache doll head glued to paper mache bee body placed in deep box with collage elements.

Did you ever play with paper mache as a kid? These days paper mache has become a super-versatile, hip and cool medium to consider using for your mixed-media art. Powdered paper mache mixes up easily with water, and since it is self-adhesive, it can be molded onto any armature or existing nonslick object to create beautifully detailed sculptures. While the paper mache surface is still wet, it can be stamped or marked to add texture, and once it has dried, it can be sanded, painted, drilled or carved into. Press paper mache into a silicone press mold and let it dry, and the result will be a piece with an interestingly rustic texture. When dry, paper mache is extremely hard and durable, yet quite lightweight. Mix up a batch and try it.
