Plaster Plus More for Backgrounds

We all have bubble wrap and scrap lace or textured fabric somewhere in our house or studio, so let’s put them to use by combining them with plaster to create dramatic backgrounds. Here are just a few easy ideas to get you started.

STEP ONE: Lay bubble wrap on wet plaster that has been applied to a board.

STEP TWO: When dry, pull the bubble wrap off.

STEP THREE: Sand the surface very lightly after 24–48 hours. Then add paint or gold leaf (as shown above).

STEP ONE: Glue lace and doilies to the surface of a gessoed board.

STEP TWO: Apply plaster over it.

STEP THREE: When dry, it can be painted or left white.
