Frame Casting with Plaster of Paris

Plaster can make not only the background for art but the art itself. All you need are a thrift store frame, traditional clay, stamps or other mark makers, and your plaster to make a beautiful, framed, cast plaster masterpiece.

STEP ONE: Roll out a slab of clay.

STEP TWO: Mark and trim the slab to fit your frame.

STEP THREE: Apply the clay inside the back of the frame. Make sure the clay presses firmly against the inside edges of the frame.

STEP FOUR: Make marks on the clay with stamps or any kind of mark-making tools.

STEP FIVE: Pour plaster of a soupy consistency onto the clay and allow it to dry for anywhere from half an hour to a couple of hours. Do not let the clay dry to the point where it is no longer pliable.

STEP SIX: Flip the frame over and peel off the clay slab to reveal your framed plaster artwork. Make sure the plaster is completely dry before you paint or stain it, or just leave it au naturel.
