You can also make molds with the putty using low-textured items like beading or a textured collage. After making the mold, place fiber paste on the mold, rolling it with a rolling pin to make sure it is flat, not lumpy. This requires less sanding later. When one side is dry, put it between wax paper with a heavy book on top so it will not warp while drying. The drying time is longer but worth it. If it has warped, try soaking it in water and gently try to flatten it. Too much pressure and not enough wetness may cause it to crack.
STEP ONE: Place fiber paste on the putty mold, then roll over it until the paste is smooth and flat.
STEP TWO: Let the fiber paste dry on the mold, then peel it off and paint.
Shown is a large mold (middle) made from Indian beadwork (left). A fiber paste flower (right) was made from the mold. The finished cast was painted brown with gold rub added.
