Two weeks later
Our shift was almost over, and as I gathered my things to leave, Royce rushed into our office. I hoped whatever he was going to say wouldn’t delay me from heading where I was about to go.
I raised a brow. “What’s up, Boss?”
“Just got a call from the state police. Ken Jarrett said they busted the organ-trafficking ring wide open, at least the one in Augusta that was related to the Jennison case.”
“That’s awesome news. I hope every last one of them rots in prison or worse.”
Royce slapped the doorframe. “That calls for a celebratory drink. On me, of course.”
“I’m up for that,” Rue said.
“Yeah, I’ll have to pass.”
They both jerked their heads my way.
I raised my hands. “Okay, okay. I was going to surprise you in the morning. My new Vette is in, and I’m going to go pick it up. I was hoping you’d go with me, Rue.”
Devon laughed. “Yeah, I’m not so sure I’m ready for that. Don’t forget your track record. You crashed your beloved white Vette, then you destroyed the front end of that Ram when you slammed into T. J.’s car and pushed it up the driveway and into the van. You turned that car into a sardine can.”
Royce chuckled as Rue carried on.
“My feelings are hurt, guys. I’m a great driver, and neither of those incidents were because I was at fault. It’s the price one pays for being a damn good detective.”
“How about this?” Royce said. “You go pick up the Vette, meet us at King’s Bar and Grill, and then you can take us for a drive around the parking lot.”
“Yeah, okay, but once you see her, I know you’ll reconsider.”
Lawrence and Bentley walked by. “What’s going on? Reconsider what?”
Royce continued. “I’m buying drinks at King’s Bar and Grill. Mitch is going to pick up his new Vette, then he’ll come by and show it off to us. I said I’d take a ride around the parking lot with him.”
“Can’t wait to see it,” Bentley said. “You’ve been waiting a long time for that beauty. Congrats, Mitch.”
“Thanks, buddy.”
Rue grinned. “Okay, Cannon. The hell with it. I’ll be happy to go pick it up with you, and you can even let her rip. After all, what are partners for?”
I laughed as I headed out the door. “Now you’re talking my language.”
