EPILOGUE

The next day, Mitch updated them at the café during the after-lunch lull.

“George made a full confession at the hospital,” he told them. “Apparently, once he started talking, he couldn’t stop. He also asked them to ban Brianna from visiting him in hospital. He said he couldn’t deal with her right now.”

“How is his knee?” Lauren asked. The four of them sat at a table in the rear.

“He’s got a badly torn ligament. He should be out of hospital in a couple of days, and then he’ll be going to jail, even if he does have a fancy attorney.” He paused. “Detective Castern got a little reprimand from our boss for not looking at George and his daughter more closely.”

“Good.” Lauren nodded in satisfaction.

“Brrt!”

“What about Brianna?” Zoe asked curiously.

Mitch shrugged. “George said she had nothing to do with the murder, or knew anything about it. And by what you told me about her reaction to finding out yesterday, I think that’s true. I’ve heard that he’s going to bar her from visiting him in jail, too. Said it’s the only way he’ll get some peace and quiet.”

“Is she still going ahead with the wedding?”

“I haven’t heard that she – or Bobby – have called it off yet.”

“I hope Bobby will be okay,” Zoe said. “He seemed like a nice guy.”

“Yes. I don’t think he’s interested in Brianna because of her dad’s money,” Lauren added.

“This sort of thing puts you off wanting kids.” Zoe shuddered.

What about you?” Mitch took Lauren’s hand and looked at her intently.

She smiled at him with certainty. “Ours wouldn’t be like that. Not with you as their dad.”

“Or with you as their mom.” He smiled at her tenderly.

“If you two are going to be all lovey-dovey, I might as well hang out at the counter with a marshmallow latte.” Zoe rose. “But I know you two are going to be super awesome parents – one day. Aren’t they, Annie?” She winked at the silver-gray tabby.

“Brrt!”
