Day 4

Wednesday 15th June 1994

I’m doing something different, and I have your support to do that. Yet there are also doubters, nay-sayers who don’t like what’s happening: the reactionaries, saboteurs, anti-social elements and anti-democrats—the ones who can’t accept the will of the people.

They may not accept the situation, but I accept them.

I tolerate them and their outdated attitudes because I know that the people of the GDR will overcome this irresponsible resistance.

But I can’t accept state agencies interfering in democratic processes. I’ve been informed that there has been an attempt to access my cadre files in the Party archive. Not an attempt by one of those meddling journalists—no, it is far more serious than that.

This attempt to gain illegal access to the Party archive was by a member of a government agency.

Not just any government agency, but the Republikschutz itself.

Agencies like the RS are undermining our country. The RS may claim to uphold democracy but they are unaccountable, secretive and dangerous.

That is why the people voted to wind up the RS. Yet here we are, more than ten weeks after the referendum, and the RS are still going about their dubious business.

This is not acceptable. Let me be clear: the RS is not democratic. It is a danger to our democracy and we cannot allow it to continue to defy the will of the people.
