O believers, obey Allah, and obey the Messenger and those who are in positions of authority among you. And if you disagree on some matter, refer it to Allah and His Messenger, if you believe in Allah and the Last Day. That is a better and more suitable way to reach a final decision. (al-Qur’an 4:59)

THE PROPHET 
said: ‘A Muslim must hear and obey (those in authority), whether he likes the order or not – unless he is asked to do something sinful, in which case he need not hear or obey’. (Bukhari, Muslim)

THE PROPHET said: ‘When three (or more) people set out on a journey they should choose one of them to be their leader’. (Abu Dawud)

THE PROPHET said: ‘Do not ask to be made a leader, for if the position is given to you after you have asked for it you will be left on your own to carry it out. However, if it is given to you without asking, you will be helped (by Allah) in carrying out its duties’. (Bukhari, Muslim)
