And worship Allah and do not join any partners with Him and show kindness to your parents and near relatives, to the orphans and those in need and to the neighbour who is of your own people as well as the neighbour who is a stranger… (al-Qur’an 4:36)

THE PROPHET said: ‘By Allah, he is not a believer! By Allah he is not a believer! By Allah he is not a believer!’ He was asked, ‘Who, O Messenger of Allah?’ he replied, ‘Anyone whose neighbour does not feel safe from his harm’. (Ahmad)

THE PROPHET said: ‘Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day should not trouble his neighbour, and whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day should entertain his guest generously, and whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day should say what is good, or be silent’. (Bukhari, Muslim)

THE PROPHET said: ‘Ask permission to enter (someone’s home) up to three times. If you are given permission (you may enter). Otherwise, you should leave’. (Tirmidhi)

ʿA’ISHAH relates: ‘I said: “O Messenger of Allah, I have two neighbours. Which of them should I give gifts to (first)”? He replied: ‘To the one whose door is nearer to yours’. (Bukhari)

THE PROPHET said: ‘(The angel) Gabriel kept on advising me about the (importance of) being good to neighbours, until I thought he would order me to give them a share of my inheritance’. (Bukhari)
