Chapter 1: What Is Apple Cider Vinegar ?
Even with the countless advancements in medical science and research, there seems to be an aching for traditional, maybe even archaic, methods for curing and managing ailments. It is true that people are living longer today, and even living relatively normal lives, even though they are stricken with illnesses they would have never survived centuries, even decades earlier. The countless medications available, plus the invasive procedures and medical therapies that can be performed are quite phenomenal, to say the least.
However, these various treatment plans can still cause a lot of pain and heartache. This is especially true regarding finances. When a person needs some sort of medical treatment, it costs them both time and money. This is just a reality of life. Furthermore, these interventions are curative, rather than preventative. This means that the reason a person is receiving them is because they are already in poor health. A person will take blood pressure medications because their blood pressure is at unhealthily high levels. A person will need invasive surgery because they have some major illness or injury that needs fixing.
Curative medicine is focused on sickness. Preventative medicine is focused on staying  healthy. When we focus on preventative health, we take active steps every single day to maintain our well-being. This is what we are here to discuss today. Keeping the body healthy is the goal that we are after. We want to avoid medications, invasive procedures, and advanced medical therapies. We want to keep our bodies from getting to the point where we need them, at least for as long as we can. Our main focus for this book will be digestive health, weight loss, and body detox techniques. However, while keeping our focus on these areas, we will inevitably affect different aspects of our health too.
There are numerous preventative measures out there. Unfortunately, many are a scam and give people a false sense of security. People believe they are doing things to improve and maintain their health, but in reality, they are actually causing unforeseen damage in the long run.
Lucky for us, there are still numerous beneficial practices out there and a major one is described in this book. We will be discussing the power of apple cider vinegar and the influence it can have on our bodies. We will introduce this amazing substance and emphasize how it can be used for detox and to promote weight loss.
Apple Cider Vinegar Facts
What exactly are we dealing with here? Apple cider vinegar is a versatile solution produced from the fermentation of apple cider. Many people use it to make dressings for their salad, stir it into different drinks, and as an ingredient in their food preparation. In fact, in a later chapter, we will give you numerous recipes related to this miracle substance. Yes, when you learn the multitude of benefits that this solution has, miracle will seem like an appropriate word.
If you are looking for something smooth and satisfying to your palate, sorry to say, but you will not find it here. We don’t mean this in a bad way.  Apple cider vinegar has quite a strong taste and smell, which makes it very hard to ingest alone. This is why we won’t be taking it by itself, but we will showcase how it can complement many different food and drink recipes. You can also take a small amount of it mixed in with water to help dilute the strong taste. As an additive to food, apple cider vinegar can bring out some amazing flavors.
The Fermentation Process
Fermentation is the chemical process by which a particular organism converts starches, sugars, or other carbohydrates into alcohols or acids. Beer, wine, and other liquors go through a fermentation process in order to be created. In the case of apple cider vinegar, the process is done using yeast or bacteria. It is actually a two-step fermentation process. The first one uses organisms to break down the natural sugars found in apples into alcohol. This alcohol then undergoes a second fermentation process, which results in apple cider vinegar.
To get in-depth, whole apples are crushed, which creates a liquid or juice. This juice has many natural sugars found in the fruit. In most cases, the juice is mixed in with yeast, which will convert these natural sugars to alcohol. The alcohol is then mixed with a bacteria known as acetobacter. Acetobacter creates acetic acid, which gives the vinegar its tangy taste. Small traces of nutrients that are used by our bodies for normal function are also found in acetic acid. This acid is found in all kinds of vinegar, not just apple cider vinegar.
The entire fermentation process is quite extensive and can take anywhere between three to six weeks to complete. The solution is stirred every three to four days just to keep it moving a little bit.
The History
Apple cider vinegar has been a major staple in the kitchen for several decades now for various cooking, dressing, and food preparation methods. However, what people don’t realize is that it dates back to the time of Hippocrates, a Greek physician who is actually considered to be the father of modern medicine. The famous Hippocratic Oath, which is named after him, is still recited in medical schools across the globe. Hippocrates often used apple cider vinegar for cleansing open wounds and infected cuts. In addition, it was used with a combination of honey to help with several respiratory issues. Even centuries ago, people understood the extreme benefits of apple cider vinegar.
Nutritional Information
Apple cider vinegar, by itself, does not provide many of the major nutrients. As a whole, it only has three calories, and some brands even have zero. It contains no proteins, carbohydrates or fats. This is why it is used as more of an additive or supplement than an actual meal. People will use it by mixing it into drinks, or as an addition to various food preparation. Its best use comes in the form of an ingredient.
Common Uses
Apple cider vinegar is a very diverse product that has numerous uses. These go well beyond the use in food and drinks. In its own way, it is a magic potion that yields many positive attributes. We will get into a number of ways in which apple cider vinegar can be used in our meal plans by providing structured recipes. Until then, we will describe some general, everyday uses for the solution for your own health and well-being. For this section, we will mention only how it can help our own bodies when taken orally. Later in this book, we will provide some fun trivia about different ways apple cider vinegar can be used.
Apple cider vinegar has many antibacterial properties, which makes it a great alternative to mouthwash. Due to its high acidity and strong taste, it is recommended that you dilute it prior to using it as a rinse. One tablespoon of the vinegar with a cup of water, around 240 ml, should be plenty.
Due to its acidity, it can also be used on teeth to help remove stains. Using a cotton swab, run a small amount of apple cider vinegar on your teeth. Do this on a daily basis and you will begin to see amazing results. Do not use too much vinegar, and also make sure to rinse your mouth out well afterwards, as the acidic solution can be harmful to your tooth enamel.
Vinegar can be added to various soups in order to bring out the bold flavors. Add it to a bland soup, and notice the difference that it makes to the taste.
You can use apple cider vinegar to help with boiling eggs. The vinegar will allow the egg to firm up much more quickly, and it will allow the eggs to keep their shape.
Do you have a sore throat that is quite painful? We certainly have a solution for you. Apple cider vinegar is a popular home remedy for helping with a sore throat. The reason for it is not well-known, but it’s likely due to the antibacterial properties. Again, due to the high acidity of the solution, please dilute it well prior to use, otherwise, it may cause throat burns. Simply gargle the solution.
There are numerous other uses for apple cider vinegar. These are just a few major ones. Who knew that we were keeping liquid gold in our kitchen cabinets for so many years?
