The Hundred
Syllable Mantra
In Tibetan Buddhist practice, the Hundred Syllable Mantra is used to purify the mind’s defilements, prior to undertaking more advanced Tantric techniques. Here is the mantra in its original form:
OM BENZASATTO SAMAYA MANU PALAYA
BENZASATTO TAY NO PAY
TITA DIDO MAY BHAWA
SUTO KA YO MAY BHAWA
SUPO KA YO MAY BHAWA
ANU RAKTO MAY BHAWA
SARVA-SIDDHI MAY PRA YA TSA
SARVA-KARMA-SUCHA MAY
CITTAM SHREYAM
KURU HUM
HA HA HA HA HO
BHAGAVAN SARVA
TATHAGATA BENZA MA MAY MUNZA
BENZA-BHAWA MAHA SAMAYA SATTVA AH
Here is a translation of the mantra. It is addressed to Vajrasattva, one of the most important bodhisattvas in the Mahayana and Tibetan Buddhist traditions:
Homage to the sacred connection with Vajrasattva.
Oh Vajrasattva, protect this sacred connection,
May you reside firmly in me,
Give me complete contentment,
Have faith in me and look kindly upon me,
Grant me all the accomplishments,
Show me all the karmas.
Make my spirit good, virtuous and far seeing,
Oh Essence of Buddha Vajrasattva
We celebrate the signs of accomplishment.
Oh Radiant One who embodies the Diamond Spirit of all the Buddhas
Do not abandon me.
Grant me realization of the Vajra Essence
Make me one with You.
