Saddle Up

Gus is getting his saddle squared away as Ethan watches. "Mr. Baxter." Gus keeps working on his gear as he answers, "Yea kid."  Ethan presses a little with, "Kin I ask ya somethin?" Gus turns to look at Ethan and says, "Best make it fast, I got ta skedaddle. Can ya say yer piece in two shakes of a lamb's tail?" Ethan quickly asks his question. "My friend Josh has a book about gunfighters, and I seen yer picture. How'd you get famous an all?" Gus slows down but keeps working. "Fergit it kid. Bein fast on the draw ain't no way ta live." But Ethan keeps asking questions. "How fast are ya?"

A little lost for words and a mite annoyed, Gus keeps working as he answers with, "I guess I'm faster than most, but every day I gotta look over ma shoulder ta see what fools comin ta try an take me on so's he can make a name fer himself by shootin me dead." Gus looks over at Ethan and continues with, "That's how I come by you folks. Got shot in an ambush. An who ever did it, is bound to try an finish the job." Gus is still getting ready to ride out.  But Ethan continues his questions with, "How many gunfights you been in?" Gus sighs and lowers his head like he's being worn out. Then Gus turns to Ethan and says, "kid, that's enough gunfighter talk." Gus starts working on his gear once again. Ethan is disappointed but still wants to talk to Gus as he asks, "Ok, um, are, are you going ta Logan?"  Gus decides to shut Ethan up with, "Yeah kid, I'm goin ta Logan. I hear tell it's a quiet town. A place where folks don't tray ta talk a fella ta death."

Just then Sarah comes out of the house carrying a sack. Gus mounts his horse with a grunt and then gives Ethan a look. Sarah hands Gus the sack and offers, "Here ya go. I put a little something together fer ya. An don't get ta bangin it around cause there's a canin jar full ah stew an one full ah peaches fer yer sweet tooth." Gus gladly takes the sack and ties it off around his saddle horn as he replies with,  "Thank ya kindly Sarah. You an the kid er fine folks, lots better'n I'm used to." Then Gus starts to ride off, but stops as he warns, "You keep an eye out fer strangers. The fella that ambushed me might show up. " Sarah asks, "Will ya be back this way?"  Gus shakes his head no and says, "Not likely, but then again, I hear tell yer griddle cakes are mighty tasty." Gus looks down at Ethan. "Specially with plenty a lot a sorghum." With that, Gus spurs his horse and rides off as Sarah and Ethan wave goodbye. As Gus rides away, Ethan asks, "Ma, do you think we'll ever see Mr. Baxter agin?"  Sarah continues watching Gus ride away as she answers with, "I don't rightly know Ethan, I don't rightly know." Then Sarah turns and heads back toward the house as Ethan continues watching Gus ride away. Sarah turns back to Ethan and says, "Come on Ethan, we got chores ta tend to." Ethan turns and runs toward his Ma. As he does, Sarah looks out across the land, wondering if there's trouble headed there way.
