Sarah has his arms and Ethan has his legs as the two struggle to get Gus through the front door of their house. as they do, Sarah tells Ethan, "Come on, we'll put him in yer bed here in the front room so I can keep an eye on him." The two struggle to drag Gus over to Ethan's bed where Sarah starts pulling off his boots. "Fetch me some water Ethan, an flour sack fer bandages." Ethan stares at Gus for a moment, then quickly turns and runs for the front door and out into the yard.
Sarah starts looking over Gus's wounded arm, then removes his gun belt as Ethan returns with the bucket of water and sets it on the floor next to the bed. Sarah gives Ethan more direction. with, "Flour sacks er under the side board. And here, take his gun and gun belt and put it on the side board." Ethan takes the gun rig, stares at it a moment, then quickly takes it over to the side board. As Ethan sets the belt down he sees the name, "Gus Baxter" carved into the inside leather. Right away, Ethan knows who the man is. He grabs some flour sacks and runs back, excited to tell his Ma.
Ethan stammers "Mma! The, the name... inside the gun belt... it's, it's Gus Baxter!" To Sarah the name means nothing. She continues cleaning up his wounds, then tears the flour sacks into strips and uses them for bandages. Ethan is surprised that his Ma doesn't say anything, so he asks again, "Ma, you know who Gus Baxter is?" Sarah continues cleaning up Gus's wounds as she replies, "Can't say as I do. Why?" Ethan is excited and blurts, "He's famous Ma... He's a gunfighter!" Sarah stops a moment and turns to Ethan as she asks, "What makes you think he's a gunfighter?" Ethan tells his story. "My friend Josh's got a book about gunfighters and such, an we seen his name. An he's real famous too." Sarah goes back to tending Gus's wounds and says, "Well, that don't mean this is Gus Baxter." Ethan is surprised by his ma and tries harder to make her understand. "But he is Ma, his names carved on the inside of his gun belt." Sarah suddenly stops tending Gus's wounds for a moment and looks up at Ethan. "Well I don't know bout all that. Right now we best tend to Mr. Baxter's wounds, if that is his name." Sarah returns to bandaging Gus's wounded arm. "He's hurt pretty bad an it's our Christian duty ta help im if we can."
Sarah looks back at Ethan and notices that he's staring at the blood on his bed from Gus's wounds. "Whatcha takin note of Ethan?" Concermed, Ethan tells her, "Them's my only covers Ma."
