Supper Time

The soft glow of a coal lamp and a streak of sunset coming through the window light the house as Sarah puts supper on the table. Gus is still unconscious on Ethan's bed while Ethan stands at the side board admiring the gun belt.  Sarah notices what her son is doing and calls out to him, "Time fer supper... an quit gawkin at that gun belt."  Still fascinated Ethan answers with, "Yes ma'am" as he heads over to the table and takes his seat while Sarah serves up supper, then takes her seat. They both fold their hands to say Grace.

Sarah begins with, "Dear Lord, we come before ya ta ask not only yer blessing on the food that you've provided, but ta ask yer help so's we can fix up Mr. Baxter." Ethan sneaks a one eyed peak at Gus as Sarah continues. "We don't know why ya chose ta send this man our way, but we trust ya ta give us guidance and wisdom. Amen."

As they start eating their supper, Ethan looks over at Gus again. Sarah takes note of Ethan's continued fascination with their visitor. "Ethan, I gotta say this. I don't much like the idea of a gunfighter in our home. If that's what he is. But we'll tend his wounds so's he can be on his way soon as he's able." Ethan looks at his Ma and asks, "Do you think he's a bad man?" Sarah thinks for a moment, then answers "He is if he's a gunfighter like you say. So you just stay clear."
